The D40 and D40x are now discontinued and have been for a while, the best you can get for roughly the same price with inflation added is the D3000

argos had the D60 and zoom lens for about £270 last week -this is close to the D40 without spending the earth.

I havent read many good reports about the D3000 but i believe its basically exactly the same as the d60? i'll have a better look into it. I have read good things about the D5000 but at just under £500 its just a bit too much.

I've had a look on the argos website and they dont seem to have the D60 aymore. I dont mind spending a bit more, say around £400.

thanks

If you're going for a D40x you may as well get a D60..

Anyway, have a look at the new D3100 which looks like a belter of a starter camera :)

ok, having read some reviews i'm going to get her the D3100. Ive found it on Elitegadgets.com for £467 With 18-55mm VR Lens, has anyone ordered from them before?

thanks for all you help

After a quick google, it seems Elitegadgets are not a very reliable company :shake:

Has anyone used RGB-photo.co.uk? and what difference is a grey import?

thanks

I have a D40 which is a great starter camera but maybe a little dated by now, the D3000 would be a much better buy in my opinion.

sorry to disagree.......the D40 is still an excellent starter...can be sold for pretty much the purchase price when it's time to upgrade

...to a D5000 or a D90

I've used RGB for a couple of Philips DVDs in the past with no problems.

a grey import is where a UK based company buys cheap from overseas and sells to you
you will not get a Nikon Warranty - usually only a 6 or 12 month return to seller

THEY then return to supplier for warranty - you could wait months for a repair

Thanks everyone for your advise. I will be buying her the D3100 but have been told to wait until early Nov when we should start seeing some xmas deals ;)

thanks

If you are buying it just PM Stuart at Digital Depot, he is a member on here and will give you a decent price. I am sure she will be very happy with it.
