Can someone explain how Auto-ISO works on a Nikon D60?

Yes
Ok, I've looked in the manual and set auto-ISO in the menu's so that it won't drop below 800 ISO.

The only problem seems to be the 'Auto' is greyed out and non selectable in 'A' or 'S' modes, which are the 2 modes I use the most.:bang: Does auto-ISO only work in P mode or M mode? I've tried these modes also and 'Auto' always seems to be greyed out as well. :(

AutoISO definitely works in "A" and "S" mode.

BTW you can't set autoISO so that is won't drop below.. autoISO has a maximum limit, not a minimum, your minimum is base ISO (100 on a D60). I shot my D60 in auto all the time as its quite good up to ISO1600.

Can't think why it is greyed out off the top of my head.

Actually you can set a minimum as well. Set your ISO before switching on auto ISO and it won't drop below the level you set manually. e.g. set your ISO to 800 - switch on auto ISO with a MAX of say 3200 and it will vary between 800 - and 3200.

dont your auto iso

Bad advice.

Auto ISO works in 1/6th stop increments - via control dials you only get 1/3rd stop adjustments.

Its perfectly possible for auto ISO to choose ISO110 or ISO960 - try doing that any other way.

Your advice stinks, as does your sentence construction;)

Strangely enough, I was wondering this last night, I couldn't get it to work on A,S,P or M. (D60).

I finally figured it out, you don't have to choose 'auto' iso in the main setting screen.

Do this:

Go into the menu and set auto iso to on. then go back and set it so it only kicks in at 1/60 sec shutter speed for example.

Now go back to the main shooting screen and set the D60 to ISO 100.

Stop down or shoot something dark, you may see 'auto iso' flashing on the screen of viewfinder. Take a shot. Now view it's info. With any luck the camera should have upped the ISO for you.

Now I've figured out how to use it, I don't think I could do without it! It's a great feature IMO.

EDIT I think it may only work on P or A modes though...
