can you get good photos with a P&S?

I've only recently joined and it seems that everyone has DLSRs, and I'm kind of feeling like I'm a toddler trying to join in with the big boys :lol:

I understand composition plays a huge part in being a 'good' shot, but seriously, can you get good decent shots with a P&S?

(I have a Nikon Coolpix P5100 which I really love cos I'm not very 'techy' if you know what I mean)

yes you can but you are often more limited in the control you have of the camera and the ability of the lens to resolve detail.
 
Of course you can, however the DSLRs give you more flexability with regards to lens choice, settings, etc.
 
I personally know someone who went out and blew 21 grand on goodies and hasn't a clue, and can't take a good shot with it, he just leaves it in P mode and hasn't touched his other stuff :gag: :cuckoo:

I've also just seen a series of shots taken with camera phones, stunning :thumbs:

If your no good with a P&S a DSLR will only worsen things IMHO, at least until you get good at photography, then it does not matter what you shoot with.

It’s the person behind the camera that makes a good photo not the camera; we have some members at our camera club that have won competitions with a P&S.
 
I always take a Nikon P&S for my jollies - works just fine, and actually makes a nice change too being able to pocket a camera :D

6mp is enough for most normal print sizes too and I'm certainly happy enough to run an A4 print from it

To go against the grain though, I think it can be harder with a simple P&S than a DSLR due in part to the exposure/focus lock needing manipulating (kidding basically), but to answer your question - Yes, you can take good shots aplenty with a P&S

I'd say yes - I've got a Fufi P & S for when I want somthing I can slip in a pocket - or take underwater (in a housing), but some of my favourite pic are taken with it - its more frustrating to use though

thing i never liked about P&S was that they never seem to deal with the light properly...but then again same goes for some slr lenses

they are not inside the camera

you can take a great shot with your point and shoot
just dont enlarge it

not all photos need to be in RAW
 
You can get some VERY decent to great shots on a P&S and if you don't believe me, go to Flickrand compare some of yours with some of the 'stuff' (for want of a better, but far more insulting word).

I have only recently upgraded and can firmly say that I had good shots from my P&S and that I had no regrets staying with it for as long as I did - it was a great way to learn composition etc without spending more money and getting frustrated when pics didn't do what I wanted (given that I wanted to get out of auto mode).

I'm really pleased that it's not too important - because I :love: my little P&S and the DLSRs do seem really big & heavy. I'm a bit of an opportunist - I don't sit & wait for the perfect shot and like to put it in my pocket when going out, so it sounds like a P&S is a good choice for me :)

I am sure there was a programme on beeb a couple of years back showing a pro shooting great images on a camera phone, never mind a p+s.

Yes you can. You may get to a point where the P&S can't do what you want it to though.
 
Point and shoot are good for quick snapshots of moments, but not great if you want to do anything to pictures such as make a short DOF due to the restrictions with a P&S.
