Hi People,

Can You Recommend Me A Backpack for carrying my nikon d80 with a few lenses.

Max price around £50.

If any one has one for sale I will consider.

Many thanks
Sam:wave:

I'd be quite interested in the replies. I'm after a simple backpack around this price for my 500d and room for a couple of lenses and filters, remote, etc.

Sorry to hijack but I've been thinking of asking this for a while.

Slingshots are nice if you're happy to carry all your gear on one shoulder and not be able to swap it. Personally I found it ok to begin with but, especially on longer days like when I'm holiday, it's quite tiresome.

I'm also in the market for a new bag and at the moment I'm trying to find a Kata 3N1 to try out. They are rucksacks with removable, adjustable straps that can be set up to act like a sling, a crossover rucksack (so you can turn it into a sling immediately by unclipping one strap), or just a regular 2-strap backpack for the long walks.

The 3N1-10 is around £50 I think and appears to be enough for the camera + attached lens (not too long), plus 2 extra lenses and maybe another one in the top compartment.

The 3N1-20 is £65+ and is the larger brother so can take 3/4 extra lenses I think.

You can get tripod holder attachments for £12 too so you can attach one to the back of the bag.

My only concern is that I have seen people complaining about the straps being too thin so they aren't as comfy as they could be. They look pretty chunky to me from the photos so I'm keen to try it myself. I was also thinking that I could quite easily slip some thicker strap covers over the top if needs be. I've also seen complaints about the zips not closing fully so potentially letting rain in. Again, I want to see one in the flesh.

My other option is a Lowepro Fastpack 200.

It's just like the Slingshot in that it's side loading, except it's a dedicated backpack, so it won't dangle from your neck while you fiddle with your camera; you'll have to make sure you hold it steady with your elbow while you grab your camera out, etc. I'm not too keen on this, so I'm eager to try and 3N1 as soon as possible.

Are you interested in the sling functionality at all? Being able to access your gear while standing?

Keep us updated on your findings because it sounds like I'm after a similar thing to you too.

I have been using a 3IN1-10 for a while now and I'm very pleased with it.

I particularly like the "swing it round to access the bag contents" feature as it means you don't have to put it down to change lenses.

I usually carry it across my back with a single stap, and when full up it is a bit heavy, but as soon as I take anything out it's OK. The trouble then is that anything you still have in the bag is not supported by everything else and can move about. Having said that I haven't had any problems.

As you say the bag is not waterproof but does come with a rather bright yellow cover that takes seconds to fit, but then you cannot access the bag.

I think the 10 has been replaced hence the low price, but still a good piece of kit.

I would recomend taking all your kit to the shop and try to get it to fit first, I was looking for the smallest possible solution and thought the 20 was too big.

OP - sorry for the thread hijack but I assume all this discussion is helpful to you :D

Thanks for that info. I was worried that the 20 might be too big which is one of the reasons I'd like to see it in the flesh. Can't find any local stockists though, unfortunately.

You can see my current gear setup in my sig. I have no immediate plans to get any new lenses so do you think I'd be ok with the 10?

Do you know what the 10 has been replaced with? Is there an improved model?

Have you used it much in the full backpack configuration? Is it comfortable?

Have you had any issues with rain getting in where the zips don't quite meet?

Hi guys, I am new here - just joined today.

When buying a bag you really need to consider what type of shoots you are eventually likely to be shooting in the coming year. If there is a chance that you maybe off somewhere rugged and intrepid soon then I would recommend spending a bit more in the short term to save you having to upgrade again in the near future and ultimately having to spend more money on 2 different bags.

I would always go for a lowepro bag, they are very well built but maybe slightly out of your price range. Always worth checking on ebay mind. I have always gone for the trekker range but they are pretty large and more expensive. The Stealth Reporter D100 AW would suit a d80 with a few lenses but I have never used it.

My friend has used the cheaper Camlink bags that you can get and I have to admit - you get more for your money with one of those than anywhere else but shop around as the prices vary massively.

Any idea what the difference is between the 123 range and the 3N1? One website says the 123 is the newer, lighter version of the 3N1 but another says the 3N1 is a newer bag with "more advanced features"

I've always considered Lowepro to be in the middle of the road when it comes to pricing? Certainly, from what I've seen Kata is of a higher quality at least.

i have a sling type one:
loewpro 200 aw (all weather) comes with a fold out waterproof cover

i don't use it much, due to taking only DSLR and one lens out. but before i fitted my:
Sony A300 DSLR
18-200
11-17
28-75
Flash
Snug, and had room in top compartment for wallet and keys

I'm looking for something I can carry my macbook pro too, would like a crumpler backpack

I'd recommend looking at the classifieds. I've got a bag for sale at the moment and there's a few others too.

I like mine - 3N1-30 & I've had a few bags from Tamrac Pro's - Lowepro AW mini trekker - Slingshot 300 AW... This is the best one so far, it does it all in my eye's and recommend it to anyone... Got a good deal on mine (used once) from a private seller from the bay for less than the price of a new 3N1-10... Bargains are out there if you look for them..

Another vote here for the Kata 3N1 10...I have one and think its brilliant. Materials used for manufacture are very good quality...dont have any worries with zips breaking and the like. I have all the stuff in my sig in it and the associated chargers and general junk that you carry around on a day to day basis and there is still room for another smallish lens like an UWA. I looked at various different back pack style bags and to me this stood out head and shoulders. Oh..it also comes with a rain cover so no need to worry about it and your kit getting wet.
