Canon 100-400 or Sigma 150-500

After much thought, I have just ordered the Sigma. The main reasons being the extra 100mm zoom, impending price rise, 3 year warranty and the nearly £400 price difference, enough to get a nice macro lens or replace the 18-55 kit lens.
Once I get the hang of using it, nothing stopping me getting a Canon in the future, perhaps the MkII 100-400 will be out by then!

Trouble is I have just ordered a monopod and a LowePro Flipside 400 backpack, as my nearly new Flipside 300 is not big enough for the new lens.

Where does it all end!

It is one heck of an expensive hobby, almost as bad as cars. :)

I have tripod and a monopod, but hardly ever use the later, probably would if I had a longer/heavier lens.

Had a text from the couriers, saying delivery will be between 14.04 and 15.04, very precise!
Trouble is, I am going to a funeral at 2.30, so good old Mum is going to house sit between those times.

Why not take a look at the comparison shots/charts HERE. If this is anything to go by then the 100-400 is way sharper than the 150-500 at 400/6.3.

EDIT: OOPS, just seen you have already ordered the Siggy - still I expects it is a very nice lens.

I know the Canon is the sharper lens, but as stated previously, the extra 100mm, 3 year warranty and the £400 price difference, I felt the Sigma was the lens to have, at this particular moment in time!

I am sure you will be very happy with the lens Dougie. I had not realised you had already made your mind up when I posted - I should have read the thread more thoroughly :bonk:
 
I'm sure you'll really like it. It's a very popular lens among wildlife shooters.

To me it is a starting point in the world of large telephotos.

First impressions look promising, decent build quality and a nice weighty feel, literally:)
 
Just checked on Best Cameras where I got it from.
The price has now risen by exactly £100, I knew I had their last one,
so presume the new price will be for new stock from Sigma.

Glad I did not take a extra day or two to make up my mind!
 
Well I've just managed to obtain one of these lenses. :) Hopefully should get it tomorrow with Royal Mail, can't wait to try it out! I believe I've now gotten the L lens addiction as my bank balance is now zero, it's one of the requirements after an L lens purchase! :lol:

EDIT: Apologies, was talking about the Canon, I didn't realise the OP had purchased the Sigma, either way the Sigma is still a top quality lens. :)

If money was not a issue, the Canon would win every time, but if the extra PQ equates to
the extra £400-£500 difference, I am happy to have chosen the Sigma.
 
I picked up the 150-500 as part of a trade when I downgraded from the 120-300 f2.8. I haven't used it a great deal but it's ok. Unfortunately I can't stand the push\pull zoom on the Canon 100-400. Eventually I'll get another 120-300, although I do like the OS on the 150-500...



 
I have had sigma 120-400 it lasted approx 2 years before developing a focus problem.I have just got a canon 100-400l after my sigma 150-500 let me down whilst at Silverstone for f1,I have had it 6 or 7 years though it served me well.It appears to have develop a lens communication error 1 on both cameras when the weather is warm.I have always been impressed with the images taken with it,I can't comment on the canon as I only received it today.not much difference in weight.I,m going to use the sigma(when it works)on the 1d2 and the canon on the 70d.
