I bought a mint second hand canon f2.8 17-55 IS USM back in October really like it etc etc.

However round December time I noticed when the lens was extended to 55mm you could physically move the extended part from the barel up around 4mm, and just blamed it on poor quality of its build. U

Went back to uni today and saw a couple of my pro mates, and remembered to show it to them, whos initial reaction was 'thats f*****d, you are not using it, that needs to get sorted'. (They even showed in moved when at 17mm!!). One of them is taking it with him to a CPS thing to get it looked at, e.g. how much will it cost to get fixed etc.

Was just wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem with them, or its going to be a pricey job.... (At around 50mm it used to meet resistance and click when i was zooming in and out, and was wondering if this was related, as it doesnt do that anymore).

Do you know the age of the lens?

I kno wwhen I got a brand new 28-135 a few years ago I sent it back because of barrel movement - and you could see a slight difference in images when you moved it.

Had you notices any quality issues?

Should have gone nikon

Nice and helpful there

Unfortunatly no I dont. But I think the lens had be barely used when I got it.

And canon, being ever so helpful, due to thm not being L, didnt put the code on the bottom of them.

But quality, I was playing with it recently and thought the images looked a bit soft, but we put that down to long exposure with the shutter vibrations with focussing on something quite close (other images have came out sharp).

Sounds like a problem with one of the rollers inside the lens the barrel extends on is either slightly worn or becoming loose. Norfolk Cameras checked and replaced several rollers on a lens a friend owned - cost approx £45-50. This lens had some movement on the end and it didn't impair it at all - the only reason he had it fixed was the roller came loose / broke and the lens 'locked' up at a certain zoom setting, so would have ended up damaging it if not fixed.

Has the slight wobble got any worse, do you know of anyone else who has this lens, so you can check to see what there lens is like ?

Nope, no-one else I know has it theyve either got the 24-70, or nikon.

And it has got worse after my friends started having a look at it after I said yeah, I think its knackered. And this isnt some movement, this is a hell of a lot of movement! (they thought I was fussing about nothing to begin with to).

I'd make a few phone calls and get an approx quote for the repair - how old is the lens, you say you bought it 2nd hand in October, is it still under warrenty ?

Phone Norfolk Camera Centre, they did an excellent job on my mates lens, hope you get it sorted as it's supposed to be a cracker of a lens

I have the international warranty card for it. Unfortunatly wasn't stamped, so its useless.

My mates taking it to some CPS event to have it looked at, get a quote from them, then gonna shop around till i get a reasonable one!

For Canon warranty, they take no notice of the warranty card - it's effectively meaningless. They want to see a receipt from a retailer with a UK address (or EU).

Bought it off someone at university from Thailand or similar, and that was the warranty that he got when he bought it!
