Yes
I am having trouble finding a lens that might be as good as the Canon 24-70 f2.8L. I am wasting my time trying to find something? It appears to me that other manufacturers don't make a lens of this size or standard.
Or do they?
Regards

Nope you cant get anything with the same zoom range and f2.8 which can touch it.
However you get what you pay for i guess.

What camera are you using? If you are using a crop sensor, then you can not go far wrong with the 17-55/2.8 IS. It is still expensive, but cheaper than the 24-70. And of course it has IS too, but no red ring - Guess you can't have it all!! Of course, if you're using FF then that's no good to you at all.

the 28-70 is the older version and is a little cheaper but relatively similar in quality

When's the Mark II with IS coming out? have got my order ready!.....

there was a lengthy debate on this a while ago. I don't think Canon will ever release a Mark II with IS. If they do, it would probably be about £300-£400 dearer than the existing lens.

What they need to do is make the 24-105 IS @ f2.8 - But that would make the 24-70 2.8 obsolete. So I guess Canon have no incentive to budge at the moment, they are probably quite happy to marginalise the buyers and sell both lens at high volumes.

The tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is quite well regarded, doesnt have the L build but is a LOT cheaper.

A 24-105 f/2.8 IS would also be BIG, unless between now and then there was some quantum leap in optical manufacture. I suspect it would be around as big as most 70-200s... the 24-70 isn't too far behind some of them already.

true, but i dont think it would put people off. I carry a 70-200 2.8 IS around all day along with a 24-70 2.8. Personally speaking if I had a 24-105 2.8 IS that was as big or weighed as much as the 70-200, it wouldn't put me off. I may even put the 70-200 down a lot more.

I would be chuffed if they offered it without IS to save weight. The focal length is just so handy.

I have a friend who does portraits and weddings with a sigma 24-70 2.8 and he swears by it, I have the Canon 24-70 f2.8L and it is by far my best lens and its old and battered (cosmetically)

It's not the IS that adds the weight, really, it's the f/2.8. The 24-70 has less length than the f/4, nor does it have IS, yet is substantially heavier AND bigger than the f/4. An f/2.8 24-105 would be a beast of a lens I'm sure. It doesnt matter to some but it does to others...

 but please don't petition Canon to not make one if they were planning to :D

No, but how about this - an interactive design-your-own-lens web tool :)

Put in the specs you want, and it comes up with a size, weight and cost projection? Heck, it could even generate a virtual MTF of optical performance :D

Then start a petition and if 1000 people put down the full cost in advance, Canon will make it.

It would be fun, but I suspect the £20,000 cost for a lens that performs poorly and comes with its own wheelbarrow for transportation would put a few off

Cracking idea :) (never going to happen mind )
