Had the pleasure of using a 5D Mark ?? with a 200mm L lens for sports
photography at the weekend & the focus was set when you pressed
& held the * button.

It was pretty cool when you got the hang of it & remembered to hold
the button as the focal point shifted as you moved around leaving the
shutter button as just that, a shutter button.

The owner said i should be able to set it up on the 450d but i cant seem
to find it in the menus.

Can someone post an idiot proof method of setting my camera if it at all
possible?

Thanks in advance.

You need to change CF:10 to 1 (it's 0 at the moment)

The advantage of the 40D and above is that they have an AF-on button. This is a little small so you can swap the functions of the exposure lock button and the AF button. However I don't think you get this on the 450D so the normal function of that button is lost as there isn't a new button to map its function to.
