I was having a go shooting with manual mode yesterday, I changed the aperture and shutter speed but could not figure out how to change the exposure compensation as the camera seemed to set it to -2 for some reason.
Exposure compensation tells the cameras light meter to over/under expose the shot by x number of stops.
In manual mode, you're not using the meter as you're setting the aperture, shutter speed and iso yourself, therefor exposure compensation isn't applicable.
If it was underexposed you need more light, hence wider aperture (lower number) OR a longer shutter speed. There isnt a compensation button as such.. it is just the altering of the shutter/aperture that will give you more or less light.
The Exposure Compensation button becomes the button you use for adjusting the aperture when in Manual mode. As has been said, open the aperture or make the shutter speed longer. You're looking to put the point on the guage at the bottom of the viewfinder in the middle (that's the simple view, it's more complicated than that and I've not got exactly how much +ve/-ve to use for a specific subject yet, but that's a good start point ).
Thanks for for your answers. I was trying to shoot a robin on our bird feeder when the light was not great using a borrowed 55-250 IS 3.5-5.6 lens. The thing is that the shutter speed was too slow to "freeze" the robin and at 5.6 the aperture would not go any wider. I guess I need to increase ISO, but sure that was at 400.
