Canon 50d - best camera for me?

Hi
I have previously worked in film but now want to make the change to digital. The problem I have is choosing a camera for my budget (£600). I have been used to using a Nikkormat with some fantastic Nikon lenses and am worried I am going to be disappointed in the quality of the images. I have been reading various reviews and am wondering about the Canon Eos 50d. I have seen a 50mm F1.8 lens which I think would be good for portrait work as most of my photos are likely to be of my husband and son. I could then save up for a zoom lens at a later date. Everything is always a compromise in terms of quality and cost but am I making a good decision? Any views most welcome.
Thanks

There are very few lemons on the DSLR market - the ##D range from Canon is a very good place to start.. but it's the lenses that will make the difference. The nifty fifty is nice, but you may want something a little longer sooner or later (c. 85mm). Have a look on Flickr or the portrait section here and compare the lenses used for the look you want to get. If you need more cash for the lens then consider a used 40D.

The 50D is a cracking camera capable of stunning images, check my Flickr for some examples (not that stunning, but gives you the idea). All the macro shots were taken with one. Im only selling mine as I just dont get on with the ergonomics and want to go back to my beloved Nikon!

I compared film to digital a while back and bought a 10D to see if I liked digital, then I bought a 50D, its a very good camera and excellent value for money at £600 (mine cost over £800). Lenses make a good camera either very good or average, so the 50 1.8 will be ideal, the 70/200 zoom is a great lens but you can still get 2nd hand good lenses that were designed for the old film range e.g. 70/210 3.5/4.5 zoom. Quality wise a 1D or a 5D will trounce any 1.6 crop camera but at a very hefty price (5D mk2) or price and size (1D) if taking new, 2nd hand the comparison gets a lot closer but if you want new the 50D is one of the best on the market, especially since the 60D hit the market.

Thanks for all your comments which have given me lots to look at/think about. From a price perspective I am quite interested in the 40d. What are the differences I would notice between the 40d and the 50d?

Weather sealing, Af, rear screen, micro adjustment (worth the difference alone) immediately come to mind.

As Matt said, plus the 50 is 15 MPs against the 40's 10 MPs.

Both are very fine cameras.

Prefer the lower count myself, both for noise and detail in more distant objects, but I only ever print at maximum of A4 and is the AF any better on the 50D?

Sure the micro adjustment is very handy though and the higher res screen too, but the weather sealing wouldn't make much difference as they are not weatherproofed like a 7D or the equivalent Pentax cameras

Agree with the MP count - pictures take an age to load onto teh PC and an age to view. Noise - probbaly right although we use high Iso to give us an 'impressionist' feel to our shots :)
Weatherproofing - supposed to be a lot better than the 40D, but it aint no 1D that's for sure.

5D - 2nd hand, AF not as good, screen OK, weatherproofing - wouldnt trust it, but IQ much much better as is noise handling. Few features missing (including micro adjustment, info on histogram not as good). 50D is a better all round camera (in my view), but IQ edges it for me to go 5D mk1 (we have both in our house)
