Hi I have the Canon 400D camera and I'm thinking about upgrading to the Canon 50D camera, it sounds good on high ISO performance and the extra megapixels sound good for stock photography :). Any advice or tips welcome, thanks :)

I found the 50d a good camera for stock photos. The files needed upsizing a little. I got mine through Alamyfrom the 50d at ISO 800 with no problems.

Good upgrade in my opinion.

Hi Thank you for the reply, that's good the Canon 50D is good for stock photography and you got through Alamy with it :). What megapixels do Alamy ask for? Just realised that I posted the topic in the wrong section lol, so I re posted it in the Talk Equipement section :)

The 50 is a good camera - however so is the 40... that could be worth considering as well.... What do you want to use the camera for - anything particular?

I upgraded from a 450D to a 50D a couple of weeks ago, and I'm so glad I did. My main reason for doing so was the superior ergonomics and added flexibility of the 50D, I wasn't really expecting an amazing improvement in the IQ. Also, I was able to sell my 450D kit for more than I bought it a year ago, coz the price for that camera has climbed considerably since then, whereas the price of the 50D has almost halved (largely, I think, because of the launch of the 500D, which, on paper at least, seems to be a match for the 50D, but in practice is quite different). I also bought mine mint 2nd hand; there's a lot floating about in that market coz of the recent launch of the 7D. As a result, I needed only to make a small outlay for the new camera, and I got so much new camera for the money! It really has amazing IQ and is very speedy; you may well have read about the high ISO/noise issues due to it's densely pixelated sensor, but I'm having none of that! (for a useful debate about this check out http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=179054)
Of course, you could always upgrade to a 40D for less, but the 50D's IQ is just as good, better for cropping, and not least it's newer and has a better feature set.

If you can get it for around £700 new, or less second hand, I'd say go for it; you'll see a vast improvement over your current camera.

Cheers

Hi Thank you very much for your advice on the Canon 50D camera, I really appreciate it. The 50D sounds like a good camera to upgrade to :)

I've made that very switch, the 400D to the 50D this week which will hopefully arrive tomorrow :). It was a "free" upgrade for me as the missus stole my 400D after borrowing it on holiday so looking forward to seeing if there is much difference between the two for a complete novice like myself :)

I got one about a year ago, and shot a wedding with it using it and my old 300D/Rebel. I put a 28-135 on the 50D and set the ISO at 1600 (I was shooting in a poorly lit room with flourescent lights) and it did as well as I would hope it would. The picture quality was comporable to shooting at ISO 400 with the 300D. All the night shots in my gallery were shot at 1600 with a 50D at night.

Hi That's cool you've made the switch from the 400D to the 50D, one of the reasons why I'd like to invest in the 50D is because with the 400D, in the Autumn and winter, if I use ISO 800 or 1600 on cloudy days, the background is grainy. From photos I've seen on here, the 50D looks good with high ISOs :)

I hvae recently upgraded to a 50D from a 450D and find the camera better in everyway. I have followed advice on here about what settings to turn off for improved high ISO performance and the quality of pictures at ISO 800 and ISO 1600 is brilliant.

It also much better suited to my hands as the 450D always felt a little small for me. It is a lot heavier than the 450D but this is also a positive as it feels more balanced.

I upgraded from the 400d to the 50d, i definately recommend it!

Hi With the 50D, on cloudy days, if you use a high ISO, are the photos less grainy then they are with the 400D? If I upgrade to the 50D, I'd like to use it to photograph birds :), I took some photos the other day of a marsh tit, the lighting was overcast, so I used ISO 800, the bird wasn't grainy but the background was. I've added the photo to see what you think, hope you don't mind. If I took the same photo (of the marsh tit), with the 50D, would the background be less grainy?

Happy, read through the thread I posted a link to earlier; most of the people commenting there are wildlife or macro photographers, and their experiences with the 50D is useful. tdodd's posts are particularly useful with respect to the issue of noise at high ISOs. Some people think they get too much graininess at 3200, but it has a lot to do with how you have your camera set up and how much you crop. Anyway, the 50D will perform better than the 400D at higher ISOs anyway.

Got a brand spanking new 50D today, as an upgrade to my 40D.

The lcd screen is stunning, Auto iso works nicely, and the image quality outclasses the 40D too, ive been using iso 1600 indoors just playing around and found it to be pretty good.

Selling the 40D !

Hi guys Thank you very much for all your help and advice, I really appreciate it :). Even though the 50D sounds like a good camera, after doing lots of research lol, because of the noise control and image quality, I've decided to go in a new camera direction and invest in the Nikon D300 camera (sorry for being a pain lol) :)

Very, very foolish words, man :nono:

Lol, I'm probably jumping in at the deep end (by investing in a different camera lol) but from reviews I've read, the Nikon D300 sounds good in low light conditions and the noise control sounds very good :). Also with my Canon 400D camera, the lighting's good on sunny days but on cloudy days, if I use a high ISO in the Autumn and winter, the photos are noisy :)
