Canon 50D whitebalance

I've decided as I now have 3 days off from work that I am going to venture out in the snow with my new christmas present. What I am wondering is if anyone can advise what I should set the whitebalance to on my 50D? I've only ever really used the preset settings on my 400D and think I could get a much better effect by tweaking the WB.

I also found that if I shoot with a highwe F stop and a longer exposure and use a tripod then this helps. Is there a way of making my shots seem less dull with a quicker shutter speed? I have a feeling this can be acheived with the correct WB.

Thanks in advance.

Set the WB to auto and shoot in RAW?

Can I just ask what format you shoot in? Jpeg/raw?

At the risk of opening up a can of worms I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that both of the things you're asking about could be addressed by shooting in raw and using either Lightroom or the free Canon software to tweak both the white balance and any contrast, sharpness or saturation settings until you have the image you want.
While jpeg does have plenty of supporters (and I'm not arguing with them here!) and it's very useful in certain situations, I'm a big fan of raw for it's flexibility.

On another TP thread just recently it was suggested to increase the exposure compensation to between +1.5 to +2. This is something to do with the camera using grey as its configuration and taking photos of bright white gives poor results.. hence the over exposure to stop blue or dirty grey looking pictures. It might be more beneficial to find the thread as it explained much better than me :)

I've never used any kind of package such as photoshop so would shooting in RAW be a bit out of my depth?

I would start off on the cloudy white balance setting - although with the snow being conveniently white you could read up on custom white balance and take a reading off your drive (Or lawn, or anything well covered)
