Yes
Used the camera last night at a local car show, recharged batteries, formatted card, went round to the neighbours and the damn thing wouldn't turn on.

Have tried giving a 'hard reset' but still dead :(

Any suggestions?

No longer under warrenty - where's the best place for repair?

Mark,

Much the same thing happened to mine, soon after buying on here. I sent it to Canon Elstree, where it was repaired under warranty - quite lot was required to correct the problem and I'm glad I didn't have to pay.

I can only advise you that Canon Elstree have never let me down but Fixation and Lehmann's are well thought of too.

I can feel it's going to be expensive :(

Any idea what was wrong with yours?

It's always worth have a prod around the micro-switch on the battery compartment door (check that the door hinge screws are tight too).

Thanks Bob, have tried the microswitch on the battery compartment and the CF slot - to no avail

Thanks though

I can't remember the full list, but included replacing the AF motor and prism. If you send it to Canon they will always give an estimate prior to repair.

Have a look at this page for addresses: Canon UK Repairers

Mark, take a look at the Sale Of Goods Act regarding the expected durability of goods.

http://whatconsumer.co.uk/the-sale-of-goods-act/

I don't believe you should be expected to pay for a repair to defective "quality" equipment within two years of purchase. Now, if you drop it and it breaks that might be a different matter, but plain failure to function for no good reason - not acceptable.

Also, FWIW, Canon at Elstree repaired my 24-70 free of charge when it was about 2 months outside warranty. At the very least you should mention the SOGA if you enter discussions with Canon.

A.J.Johnstone & Company Limited Sorted my 40D. You can email them the symptoms and they will give a rough quote before sending it to them. However, it ended up costing me twice the original quote but only because it was not exactly what they thought it was and they did ask me first before they went ahead.

:plusone:

Sorry to hear your bad news, how far out of warrenty is it ??

I would hope that if it was just outside warrenty (maybe a month or so) they would have been able to repair it as a good will gesture.

Hope you get it sorted

Cheers for all your supprt, guys.

Will Give Canon Elsree a try - have hearn good and bad stories from them, but the good outweight the bad

Thanks
Mark

My camera is in the hands of Royal Mail, made me feel sick letting it go!

Fingers crossed.....

Hope it gets a fix soon. My 5D2 went back to the fixers twice. Once in Spain and then to elstree. I am really pleased with the Elstree service and I am sure they will sort it out to a good standard.

In my opinion I would expect the components in a camera to match the durability of the shutter life at the least. I know it doesn't work like that regarding warranties etc but that would make the most sense to me.

It's done about 5k actuations - would expect it to die after 18 months and 5k shutter actuations.

Certainly making me think about whether I want to stick with Canon though!

I can see where you are coming from and yes it does sound like fairly light usage - compared to some of the hammering that some 5D II's get.

Before you jump ship - give them a chance to repair it, and it will probably give you years of use and enjoyment. It could be something relatively simple - then again may be not. Would at least get it repaired and see what it's like afterwards before jumping ship though.........

Do you think it never happens to the other makes?

I know it's a daft thing to think - but I lose confidence in things really easily!

If I have a problem with the car - I lose confidence in it, pretty much the same with everything else in my life!

I'm looking forward to getting it repaired, checked with RM and the parcel has been signed for, so it's with Canon - just a case of waiting for that call or email to find out the damage.

Won't be jumping ship just yet, but I'd never buy another Renault though...lol

Thanks for all the reassurance, guys, I'm sure when I get it back it'll be fine and dandy :)

Not as often it doesn't...

Check out my responses in this thread:
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=250442

I almost decided to respond with the numerous postings on the internet regarding nikon reliability and then decided I did have a life :) Both manufacturers have QC problems and sometimes more serious problems such as Canons 1d mkIII autofocus. I can also remember reading somewhere recently that Nikon branded DSLR had the worst reliability ratings from consumer groups  I am not going to look for the report but its no more unsubstantiated than your 'Not as often it doesnt'. No flame wars eh  I dont need to justify my Canon purchases do you need to justify your Nikon ones?

Cheers for that, Steve - did you bother to read the other thread at all?

I have no issues with Canon - none at all - zero. Apart from the fact that I have personally witnessed several failures of thier cameras while working and for that reason alone wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole for paid assignements overseas.
In a perfect world all our cameras would work fine. But they don't.

I have seen with my own eyes numerous Canon failures and no Nikon ones, while working in the same environmental conditions. None. Zero. Not One.

I'm not repeating internet rumours, internet postings and other web-uendo - this is stuff I have personal experience of.
So much for 'unsubstantiated'...

I don't need to justify my purchases either - my cameras work when I need them to: that's all the justification required.

I will start this response with an apology, i thought the smileys might have softened the tone but on rereading it did come across as churlish. Sorry ;)

I actually read that post yesterday it was one of the reasons why I felt the need to post today

Not a bad statement from someone who 'has no issues with Canon'. But many pro's do use Canon and to be honest if Nikons was so much more reliable then I would be seeing a lot less white lenses and by judging by the news pack I see on tv (even those covering politicians visits to afghan) most prominent is the white lens.

But therin lies the problem because your internet posting is no more valid than the others I have read, it is unfair to call them web-uendo when in fact for me and any other reader of this thread yours is exactly the same.

I don't need to justify my purchases either - my cameras work when I need them to: that's all the justification required.

Again apologies for that it was a pointless remark.

I dont want to fall out with you over this Rob, I often find your posts useful and factual, perhaps we should agree to disagree.

No dramas :):
It's not an issue which requires us to agree or not.
Most visiting pros to Afghan do indeed use Canon - perhaps that's why I see so many of them break.
I spoke at length to a PA photographer (Pete Byrne) last year about this very subject - PA issue their staff photographers with Canons - they have no say in the matter. Nor do staff photographers from News International and MGN.

The Canon system was purchased back in 2004-2005 when Canon had the edge with it's brilliant AF-system at a time when Nikon's AF was pretty rubbish by comparison and Canon definitely had the edge when it came to IQ - JPEGs from the D1x are horrible compared to those from the same vintage Pro-Canon bodies. Since then, as you'd expect they're now tied to the system because of the financial investment.

That was one of the main reasons that Nikon offered the 'stupid' discount for Pro's who agreed to swap back to Nikon back in 2008-2009. Many who could, took them up on that offer.
Pete was desperate to do this as he'd been a Nikon shooter when he was freelance and hated Canons with a passion - his replacement kit from Nikon would have cost PA £1200 - yes: one thousand, two hundred pounds - that's for two D3 bodies and a D300, lenses ranging from 600mm to 14mm and four speedlights and all the associated gubbins. PA said 'no' and Pete was gutted.
Photographers from The Times and The Sun also said the same - their companies required them to use Canon (in fairness, the Times photographer said he preferred Canons, even though his MkIII also died in Afghanistan - no warning, it just stopped).

The Army, Royal Navy and RAF have used Nikon exclusively for over 15 years.
Last year before the final decision to go ahead with the purchase of D3 and D3x bodies for all Service Photographers (tri-service, not just Army) we were required to re-evaluate Canon's latest cameras.
My colleague Corporal Rupert Frere took EOS 1D MkIII and MkIV bodies to Afghanistan on his six month deployment before my arrival there. He covered a spring/summer tour, I covered a Summer/Winter tour.
The MkIII broke. The replacement that Canon sent also broke. The MkIV also had 'issues' according to the guy I work with here in Germany who was deployed with him, but I don't know what they were.
Thing is, Rupert owns his own Canon cameras and much prefers to use them for his personal work.

But like me, he says he'd never deploy with them again. Faith - it's a funny old thing.

I looked at swapping a month or two ago, the only thing that put me off Nikon was the number of buttons. They look like the flight deck of Concorde, being a simpleton I like things simple.

My beef was a 5D2 that had a rear screen fail, and more hot pixels than the milky way. My 100-400L failed at 13 months old and they refused to fix it for free, costing me £225.
I must have been unlucky because Canons service was abysmal, too many lies and coverups for their mistakes.

I went Canon because in the film days I always used Canon and never had a problem.
I'm too deep into Canon kit now to change so have no choice.

Nikon always did stand for quality but over the last 10 years it seems to swing between Canon making cockups and Nikon doing the same.

If I had chance to go back and choose again I may have taken more time to choose and may have gone to Nikon :D

Well the estimate has come through, main PCB assembly had gone. Not sure what caused it but either way the repair comes to £207.69.

Again, thinking about it, not very good is it for 5,000 clicks and 18 months?

Seems not that bad to me, the price that is!Have you had a good moan at them?

The price is really good, it's the principal...lol

I've never been able to speak to anyone.

I downloaded a PDF and filled it in explaining what the fault was and who I was and posted it off to them. They then emailed me today with an estimate which I have to print off and send via snail mail with my card details.

Tried to ring this morning to pay over the phone and give authorisation fir the work and they aren't open on Saturday.

Did you buy the camera new?

It's now the 26th and the camera is still awaiting repair....

Not happy, at all!

That's the problem, I bought second hand, was a really good deal, won't be buying a second hand body again, my fingers have been burned once!

Well to restore the balance, so to speak, I bought a 450D on here last year and have so far taken over 10,000 shots with it with no problems at all!

And all the other kit I have bought on here including IS lenses have also given no problems at all.

.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the seller, not at all! There's no way it could possibly be his fault. I wouldn't even contact him!

I'll happily continue buying from sellers here on TP, just miffed with Canon and their support!

....Still awaiting parts, communication really is poo!

Apparently the technican is off they have no idea if the part has come into stock or not.

At least if theres no main boards in stock, I'm guessing it's not a common fault.

/rant over

Breathe!

Sorry to hear about your camera :( What we really need to see is all the infomation that a 3rd party "fixing" company has. See how many Canon/Nikon bodies die, and for what reason. Otherwise, 1 loud complaining voice is much louder than 100 people that never have a problem.
