Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

I'm guessing it was more of an issue of waiting for the focus confirmation beep (and not getting it because he was in ai servo) and then assuming it wouldn't focus lock.

that has happened to me a few times when i've forgot to switch from AI servo to standard focus

Has anyone sent their MKIII in for service/calibration at all? Just wondering what people's experiences are?

Hi, is there a way to set the back button focus to the joystick button?if so, how?

Why would you want to?

I use the joystick to move the af point around, this makes more sense to me...

whats wrong with half-pressing the shutter?

Because there are many subjects where refocusing every shot is not productive.
For me, that's concerts with a long lens. I back button focus on the performer I'm concentrating on, get focus, then snap away as long and as fast as I want.
Once you get the hang of it, it is no slower than half pressing the shutter to focus.

What I can't work out is why anyone would need to use the thumb woggle to focus instead of the focus button

regardless of why, the question is about can it be done not why you would assign it.

this is my camera, my settings, my customisation. i want to customize it for my needs not yours and if i see using the joystick to lock in focus as beneficial to "me" then that is what i want. that is why canon gave us the option to customize the controls of this camera:bonk:

Sounds like no one knows if u can so i might as well try myself

Fair enough - that's told me :D

Just wondered what the advantage of that set up would be.
Software is rarely written without some sort of use case.

got mine yesterday, nice to have a FF after all this time with with the Rebel line. It's a shame the SD slot isn't high speed though.. :/ And i miss being able to remotely fire flash without an external transmitter. looks like i'm gonna have to look into some Odins or similar.
The low light performance has turned my brain upside down in the way I think about upper ISO limit though! Wouldn't dream of going above 3200 on the 600d..Taken some test shots on the mk3 at it's highest and it's mind boggling!
Anyway, on page 108 of the manual, look forward to getting to better grips with it :)

I got mine last week as i shoot motorsport (mostly at the local kart track to be precise) and was constantly hitting the ISO limit on my 1100D when working late so settled on the 5d3 and 70-200 f4 (until i can afford the the 2.8is) and im in absolute love, shot a wedding with it on saturday and its an amazing piece of kit! No noise at all on what would of been me packing my kit up because of no light! absolutely love being able to bump the iso WELL past 6400 and the focus is amazing, and absolutely love 6fps!

Now that's what I call a big jump.. 1100D to 5D3 :D

Not much point in throwing money at getting a body inbetween when i know full well what my heart wanted :D :naughty:

That was exactly my reasoning! ;)

thankfully i could go for the 2.8 IS which saved me a couple times tonight when the shutter speed was 1/6 i think.. having a few 1.4 primes spoil me though, i still find 2.8 pretty slow. and the DOF seems too large..

Got mine from HDEW, great price and brilliant service.

Took this shortly after delivery, hand held ISO 2000. (I had a 1D MkIII previously and daren't go above ISO 800!)

Got mine Thursday. Focus is amazing, much better than the turd focus on the 5D Mark II. At f1.4, it hits it every time when on the 5D II it was a bit hit and miss. The corners are great for focus too so no focus and recompose.

If I had any gripes, it'd be that the viewfinder digital focus points in day light are hard to see.

whats the best price ( dont mind import) at the moment inc. 24-105 lens??

I've just placed an order for one from HDEW to replace my 5 year old 40d.
Can't wait for it to come...

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but I have a small query on my new 5D III.
I have been using 450D for the last 4 years and bought 5D last month (big jump ha!). I am used to have my camera setting shown on my screen/dashboard which shows all my setting in one screen and i dont have to toggle around to check the setting every now and then. In the markIII however the screen shows for seconds and disappears. For me to the see the setting i need to press the little 'Q' button on the side.
Is there a way i can set that still instead of pressing the 'Q' button every now and then?
Thanksss

Press the info button until you see the display. But when you take a shot, the screen will still be on. HTH.

You should quickly be able to get the hang of the top plate LCD.
It also avoids the significant battery drain from running the rear screen.
I use the Q button a lot and can find it fairly instinctively.
Just needs a bit of practice.

If you do still feel you need the rear screen settings displayed permanently, press Info a couple of times and you get a read-only version of the Q screen.
Press Q to make changes.
