If you pour water on to the front, then yes a filter would be helpful. Otherwise, complete waste of time. What 'weather' is supposed to be getting up there anyway? Use the lens hood supplied for protection.

3 For no, never used one on my 100-400 and dont intend using one on my 70-200.
As the front optic is sealed in with a locking ring I'd be interested to know where the water would get in.
The 100-400 is more likely to get water in the pump action zoom, the 70-200 uses a far superior ring zoom and nothing forward of that is open to the weather.

I'll add to the "no" brigade after having just read the user guide (shocking I know).
It states "tight seal structure ensures excellent dust and drip-proof performance"

Because Canon don't claim that it is weather sealed. If you read the specs for the lens there is no mention of weather and dust resistance.

Thanks, my user manual was on CD only, and the moment I got the box I extracted the lens, and put everything else back in the box, and the box in the loft...
