Having now obtained a Canon 2 x extender MK II I though I would try out a real life test before I got shot of the 100-400. Both shots were taken in AV mode f/8

Finally while I had everything out i had to give the 2 x extender a go on the 100 400. I lost AF, and as can be seen in the picture, I failed to get the focus spot on but this was handheld at 800mm. On a tripod I could possibly manage it but the chances of me wanting to use this focal length are remote so I'm still selling the 100 - 400.

Now this is good viewing.

Any chance of a crop showing the feather details in the wing? The head isn't consistent enough to tell really.
 
Thanks - that is a good test.

The 70-200 + 2x definitely doesn't show as much edge detail as the 100-400mm but the quality is much better than I expected having used the original 70-200mm F2.8 IS + 2x.

I expect with the Mk III converter they would be even closer

Thanks for posting this as this is questioned alot. Lot more weight in a 70-200 and x2. Guess the AF is still faster on the 100-400L?
 
Focus seemed about the same to be honest although it is very bright outside. Weight wise the 70 - 200 combination comes in at almost 400g heavier but I didn't particularly notice that.

The big plus for me is, especially given how close the quality is, the 70 -200 plus 2 x extender is still weather sealed on a 1 series body whereas the 100 - 400 isn't.

Obviously cost comes into it as the combo is almost twice the price new but if , like me, you want f/2.8 over the 70 -200 range and just occasional 400mm use it's definitely worth looking at.
 
Thanks for that, I've seen this debated many times. I have the 70-200 2.8 II and use 1.4 but held off on the 2X. I also use the 100-400 so this has been helpful.
