Hi all

Not a trick question

I have been away from Canon DSLR's for some time now, having in the past owned, 10D, 20D, 40D & 50D models and have been looking at their current range and getting quite confused, quite easy for me I know, but

Their range used to be xD was for the professionals, xxD was for serious Amatures, xxxD was for Amatures. So quite easy to understand.

Now they have xD for Professioals but also xD for full frame as in 5 & 6D but also for serious Amatures as in 7D, they still have xxD for Serious Amatures as well and xxxD for Amatures and now xxxxD for Amatures as well.

But I digress, what's the point of the 7D & 70D, compared side by side they are virtually the same camera with only minor differences, why are they producing two almost identical cameras, am I missing something obvious and shouldn't the 7D have been a full frame camera putting in in with the others 5D & 6D.

What's the point or what am I missing.

Paul

The point you're missing is equating FF with Professional.
Think of the 7d II as a 1d IV but without the bottom grip. The 70d is the most current of the line from the 10d.

Tbf Canon muddied the waters with the 6d, which is an xxD camera with FF. Maybe they should have come up with a new naming convention for it, because it appears to sit between 2 cameras aimed at pro's/semi pro, when it's very much an enthusiast camera with specs to get it down to a price.

If you're comparing the 7D MkI and 70D then yes they seem to be after the same segment of the market but the 7D MkI has now been superseded by the MkII and that's moved into completely different segment of the crop sensor market.

What's more confusing is why the 7D MkI is still for sale unless they are just clearing remaining stock since its only been a couple of months since the MkII release. The 70D is probably the better overall camera, just, but the 7D is a bit of a bargain at the moment.

Have Canon ever used the xD/xxD grouping in their marketing or is it simply our perception based on the available bodies at the time?
Their marketing clearly separates the bodies based on specifying the actual model number....pro, enthusiast etc....the 6D and 7D residing in the enthusiast category. Likewise their CPS "Club" puts the various bodies into groups which allow qualification at increasing levels....you can have a room full of 6D's and 7D's and not get off the initial level whilst 1D's and 5D's are tickets to gold and platinum membership.

There's some overlap between the 7d and 70d but then again they were released 3-4 years apart from each other. I went with the 70d when I was buying at the time because I wanted the newer of the two but as you've noticed, there's not a lot in it.

The 70D has inherited the autofocus system from the 7D apart from focus point expansion, but in all other respects it's the better camera. Canon used to have 3 formats, 1.6 crop, 1.3 crop and full frame, with the introduction of 1Dx they've combined the 1Ds and the 1D bodies into a single full frame camera model and added a couple of cameras at the entry xxxxD and intermediate semi pro areas 5/6/7D as well as the xxxD beginner and xxD intermediate ranges. Unfortunately because photography more popular now with the masses, the company's are trying to accommodate everyone's needs and requirements
