CANON 7D or 1D MK3

I bought a used 1d mk2 a year ago and want to upgrad it. I am looking at a lightly used 1d mk3 or a new 7d at the same sort of money. What do you think? Im in to motor sport(bike racing)wild life and a little landscape.

A 1D3 would be my way to go.

I appreciate the 7D has some more up to date touches but the 1D is a great sports camera and will handle wildlife admirably. 1.3x will give you a little more on the wide end than a 1.6x body.

IMHO the 1D3 can shoot anything.

Thanks do all 1d3 have live view? I have only been in to light photography for a year or so but want to do a lot more, i have a 1d2 at the moment but strugle with the small led screen and reading everything in the view finder so thought i up the anti a bit.

Live View is overrated.

As you're already used to the 1D then the mk3 makes sense, with the only other sensible upgrade option being a 5DII, the 7D is a sideways step IMO.

What do you mean manual focus? Is the 5d2 that good i thought it was more of a portraiture/weding type camara?
 
I would take a 1D3 over a 7D every day of the week.

That said there's a TP member offering his 1D3 as a swap for a 7D at the moment - might be worth asking what the reasons are.....

Not sure I understand your reasoning for this?

The 7D AF is virtually no different to the 1D3 - are you suggesting otherwise?
 
I'm struggling with a similar problem, whether to sell my 1D Mark IIN and get a 7D.

This would be purely for IQ as I think there would be more pixels in my cropped images on a 7D (or have I got it completely wrong?).

From what I can see, the move from my 1D2 to a 1D3 is not worth the extra money.

This is mainly for wildlife/birds.

I've owned both and imo it's not as clear cut a decision as some are saying. Is the size an issue for you felix? The 1D is much bigger and heavier and is more of a pain to carry around than the 7D.

What sort of conditions are you shooting in mostly? In nice light the 7D is very good and unless you are shooting really rough weather then the extra weatherproofing of the 1D is not an issue.

I personally found the AF on the 7D better than the 1D, though I didn't shoot anything really fast moving with either. For planes in flight the 7D AF gave consistantly more in focus images that the 1D.

I went from 400D to 7D to 1D and after using the 7D I found the screen on the 1D just awful! It's not a technical issue but I just couldn't get over how nasty the screen looked and how good it did on the 7D.

The other important issue is that there are a few dodgy AF examples on the 1D around. You will be able to get a brand new full warranty 7D for around the price of a used 1D.

All in all I would say a 7D is the better bet but that is mainly from my experiences of both.
 
I'd go the 7D.

it will give you extra reach for motorsport and wildlife, and being EF-S, can take ultra wides.

The 1D won't take any EF-S ultrawides, EF ultrawides won't be so wide, and long lenses won't be so long - it'll be a no man's land.

If you were just doing long lens stuff, I'd probably say the 1D, but wide angles aren't its strong point.
 
1D3 is a very nice general purpose camera. I have one and really like it. Noise control is very slightly better (1/3 stop) than 1Ds mkII, which means much better than 1D mkII or 7D.

1D mkIII has a much better AA filter compared to mkII (non-N). Hence it delivers much sharper files. It is in Canon white papers.

UWA - Tokina 12(14)-24mm should be wide enough.

If you do need all the reach you can get, then it has to be 7D. Wildlife can be one of these areas. My wildlife shooting is well over after a the sale of xxDs.
 
I've got the 1D mk3 as well.

No complaints at all, although like people have said it's a bit heavy with a chunky lens on... but i prefer that.

Also the 1D will use CF and SD.

Have a look on flickr as well, lots of examples on there of both cameras.

First of all size and weight are not a problem but weatherproofing will be.
Im going to shoot a lot of Irish road racing next year and we all know what the weather is like over there:D someone suggested a 5d2 i thought thay where more of a portaiture type camara?

My kit will be carried in a topbox on the back of my bike so i need somthing that can take a bit of punshment if need be.

I also like other aspects of photography and for that i have a 5d1 also bought used and will be replaced if i get serious about it.

Lenses i have at the moment are 70/200 f2.8,70/200 f4,24/105 f4 is and a niftyfifty. I will also want to sell my 1d2 and my5d when i make my mind up.

I wouldn't go near a 5DmkII if you want to shoot sports with servo AF. I just downgraded from a 1DmkIII, worst decision ever. I've got another 7D now and aside from the extra reach and video I found the 1D a far better camera. The AF is not the same, the 7D is good but the 1D is just better. If I could afford it I'd have kept the 1D in a heartbeat.
 
@ Felix - If you go for a used 1DmkIII I very strongly advise trying it before you buy because of the AF issues on some examples of this body. The serial numbers of the effected ones are between 501001 and 546561 as far as I know from my research.

How about selling one of your 70-200s and getting a little bit more cash for the new body? I don't mean to question your buying or sound rude but I can't really see the need for the f4 and f2.8 in your collection.

I feel that you are in a land of diminishing returns by getting £3.5k mkIV vs lightly used £1.35k mkIII. The new one has to really pay for itself, unless that money is 'pocket money'.

I didn't mean extra to blow on a mkIV as I totally agree with the diminishing returns idea. ;) I just meant some extra cash for other things as having both 70-200s seems like one is a bit redundant.

I have just bought the 70/200 f2.8 to replace the f4:D what i was thinking of doing was puting up my 5d and 70/200f4 for sale buying a 1d3 and then selling my 1d2 or sell the 1d2 and lens and keep the 5d.

Its starting to drive me nuts now :cuckoo:
