You don't really need a lot of motivation -just the dosh. Used wide open it's a very flattering portrait lens, stopped down a little and it's bitingly sharp for more 'candid' portraits, and you can hand hold it in virtually any light. So what was your motivation for stumping up for this lens?
Wondered what prompted the OP spending nearly 2k - makes for an expensive hobby.
Give that image a sharpen to see it at it's best.![]()
Do you find the focussing ring slightly 'loose' and a tad free compared to your other lenses?
Just ordered one from MPB. I phoned to ask about a 35mm f2 and ended up buying an 85L Mk1. If I'm lucky it will be here in the morning, if not it'll be Tuesday (there are downsides to Bank Holidays).

. I think it's fairly unique ( amongst my lenses anyway) that it only focuses manually when the slider is set to "manual"
FTE? I've never come across that acronym before. Is it referring to the focus-by-wire technology? If so, then surely the EF 200mm f/1.8 L needs to be added to the list. And is that the only lens with three "gears" for manual focussing? You've not got the EF50/1.0L yet then George?....I believe that it's the only other FTE lens that Canon have made.
