Postie has just been, this is the only lens i've ever owned that I'm actually scared to use in case I damage it

there's some serious depth of field at f/1.2 though:eek:

Superb lens! Have you seen the Warehouse Express price of it now? - nearly double what I paid!

I have the mk1 fabulous lens and superb bokeh  sharp as a razor:clap:

It's a bit of a "take it or leave it" lens really, eh Darren?.....;)

Bob

Oh don't rub it in guys :p:lol:

I need a lie down :coat::eek:;):lol:

How much did you pay for yours?

Cheers :)

Superb lens, I think its defiantly one of Canon's best bits of kit in either mkI / II incarnations.

Lovely image, glorious bokeh.

I have the MK1, and paired with my 1Ds MKII it's a dream team :)

So what was your motivation for stumping up for this lens?
You don't really need a lot of motivation -just the dosh. Used wide open it's a very flattering portrait lens, stopped down a little and it's bitingly sharp for more 'candid' portraits, and you can hand hold it in virtually any light.

Give that image a sharpen to see it at it's best. ;)

Aye, but that's everyone's motive!

Wondered what prompted the OP spending nearly 2k - makes for an expensive hobby.

Congrats on the new lens. It's a great choice (not for the credit card balance, though). Time to say goodbye to focus-and-recompose, though, if shooting wide open.

I've got to say that out of the lenses I have, this is the last one I'd ever think of parting with.

I spent a lot less than that, it's not new, though it looks like it's never been out of the box, not a mark on it, in all honesty I can't really afford it but I've always wanted one and it came up at the right price so I couldn't say no, expect the classifieds to be full of the rest of my gear so I can keep it :D

spec highlight from contrast adj but if you have raw that could be sorted.

nice picture, I would love that lens but already have a big shopping list.

Just ordered one from MPB. I phoned to ask about a 35mm f2 and ended up buying an 85L Mk1. If I'm lucky it will be here in the morning, if not it'll be Tuesday (there are downsides to Bank Holidays).

Do you find the focussing ring slightly 'loose' and a tad free compared to your other lenses?

It's a very strange MF system on the 85mm f1.2, being an electronic system which only works if the camera is powered on. If the camera is turned off you don't got no manual focus at all!

It does feel rather strange and somehow not proportional when you manually focus. Having said that, I rarely use anything but AF with it anyway.

Good choice. It makes a nice pairing with the 135L for portraits on FF.

Yes, it's completely different from the 50mm 1.2, but it's a great piece of kit.
I wondered if the loosness was a problem but it doesn't seem so. I think it's fairly unique ( amongst my lenses anyway) that it only focuses manually when the slider is set to "manual" and you can't manually focus in the "af" position.
George

Edit..sorry CT, for some reason I didn't get your post when I opened this thread,:bonk::bonk:

You're gonna love that lens Ed. Congrats mate.

You've not got the EF50/1.0L yet then George? ;) ....I believe that it's the only other FTE lens that Canon have made.

FTE? I've never come across that acronym before. Is it referring to the focus-by-wire technology? If so, then surely the EF 200mm f/1.8 L needs to be added to the list. And is that the only lens with three "gears" for manual focussing?

FTE? I've never come across that acronym before.

Full Time Electronic.....not sure if it's the official term but it's a reference that I've seen before. I know the 50/1.0L has it and maybe the 200/1.8 (I've never seen one) too.

Bob, I made do with the cheap and cheerful 50mm 1.2 :D:D

But I suspect the 85 will be used more, in fact not sure I'd have bought the 50 if I had the 85 first, it's certainly had quite a bit of use so far, was taking shots at a friend's 50th last w/e and the 85 was superb!

A word of caution, however, if you use the Lee filters adaptor ring on the 85, it doesn't permit focusing to infinity as it interferes with the movement, I'm going to be raising this with Lee next week and see if we can work a fix, and will let you know.
George

I'm now the pround owner of a near minty 85L okay it's a Mk1, but first impressions are 'I'm in love'

First impressions, it's a big b****r, I like the manual focus (just as well as the AF is horrendously slow), on the couple of shots I've taken so far the bokeh is amazing not just the OOF blur but how it handles the highlights.
