30D and 1D mk4 work fine in my personal experience.
If your really struggling with a 1D mk4 ask those nice chaps a Canon for a booklet on how to play with all the Cfn.

I think that if you ask which Canon is best at servo tracking, the answer is fairly obviously the 1D4, with the 7D surprisingly close behind.
A lot depends on the lens.

I've not quite figured that one out. My 300/2.8, 600/4 and 400/5.6 all perform well but my 300/4 doesn't always come up trumps.

I would guess that's because the 300/4 is quite an old design now, and not quite as fast as newer designs.
It also makes a difference what aperture you use, with higher f/numbers being slower because the diaphragm has to close all the way down, slowing the whole cycle and introducing another variable. Though I think that is usually only a factor with very low f/number lenses, like below f/2.8.

Based on design, the 400/5.6 is a full 4 years older than the 300/4 IS but maybe the lack of IS helps keep it youthful and snappy.
The aperture suggestion is possible although I'd have thought that the diaphragm in the 600/4 would be a little tardy in comparison.

The aperture thing raises an interesting question, as with the 600/4 for example, the diaphragm is clearly physically much smaller than the f/ratio suggests (isn't it?
) and positioned in the narrower mid-section of the barrel. It's only the entrance pupil near the front that is 150mm wide.Whereas with shorter lenses, like a 50/1.4 for example, the f/ratio and the physical size of the diaphragm are pretty much the same thing.

ttheduck, where are you based, perhaps someone would be nice enough to offer you a visit to double check if its user error or the actual gear, i suspect the former given the nature of all your posts so a little one to one might be more than useful.
