Sorry, I'm not with you. The 3 highlighted lenses are all great (IMO), albeit only suitable for crop-sensor bodies. Do pro's use only full-frame bodies?

That is the point he is making...some people dismiss the EF-S lenses!

Spot on, I read over and over again on different forums people saying not to get EF-S lenses, well if Canon class them as PRO lenses it's good enough for me :)

I think folk say not to get the ef-s lenses is more to do with them becoming redundant if you get a FF or a pro body. Quality of them is rarely in question (IMO)

There are 42 lenses on that list. I'm not aware of an official list of "professional" Nikon lenses, but if there were such a list, I wonder how many lenses would be on it?

Here's my starter for ten.

AF DX 10.5mm f/2.8 G ED Fisheye
AF-S DX 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED
AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
AF 16mm f/2.8D Fisheye
AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
AF-S 60mm f/2.8G ED Micro
AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR
AF-S 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR Micro
AF DC 135mm f/2D
AF 180mm f/2.8D IF-ED
AF-S 200mm f/2G IF-ED VR
AF 200mm f/4D IF-ED Micro
AF-S 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED VR
AF-S 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR
AF-S 400mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR
AF-S 500mm f/4G IF-ED VR
AF-S 600mm f/4G IF-ED VR

That's only 17 lenses. Quite a discrepancy.

So you draw up your own list, miss loads of lenses, then moan about it coming up short

Oh wow. I didn't know there was an official Nikon list. Thanks.

I'd tried to deduce what would be considered to be pro lenses by analogy with Canon's list. Clearly I was way off, which in turn means that Canon and Nikon seem to have quite different views as to what consititues a pro lens. For example:
  • Canon don't class their f/2.8 primes (20mm, 24mm, 28mm) as pro lenses, and don't class some of their faster primes as pro lenses (35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2) whereas Nikon seem to class every prime as a pro lens!
  • Nikon's list includes a number of lenses which I thought had been superceded (eg 17-35, 28-70, 85 PC, 300/400/500/600 non-VR, etc)

I guess the debate about what makes a lens a pro lens is probably akin to the debate about what makes a photographer a pro photographer....

So that's 42 on canon's list and 45 on Nikon's.

How many lenses from each manufacturer that aren't on the list?

The UK Canon list is a bit different to the USA one.

Er ... when I tried to "join" (March time I think). 50D and 40D bodies, plus 600f4 Lis and both convertors, 70-200 f2.8 Lis, 35-350 L, 24-70F2.8 L. I also have a bunch of other Canon stuff, but was politely told "30D and 40D bodies do not qualify" and "The equipment list that you have provided falls short of that required by Canon in order for CPS membership to be granted."

Must have change since I joined last year, they accepted my 20D as a second body, although I have a 1D Mkiin as my prime, they also accepted my friends 5D and 20D as his 2 pro bodies.

Yeah you're quite right tappilappi. A bit of googling suggests there are quite a few others being rejected for the same reason.

Ah well :)
