i decided to get this lens today from jessops
reserved it this morning and went to pick it up around mid day
finished the shopping and went back to the car and thought i will just check the lens
what do you reckon bloody tiny speck of black in the middle of the lens and inside :bonk:
took it back and guess what it was the last one :annoyed:

can some one tell me what does the mf-af switch do on the lens as i could not see a focusing ring on it so i take it the lens is af
if so why the switch

and breath out
 
Bummer about the flecks. The mf ring is at the front ofthe lens. It's about 3cm long.
 
The mf-af switch changes from auto (af) to manual (mf) focus. There is a slim focus ring at the front.

Not sure if a tiny black speck is important, but maybe Canon can clean or replace under warranty.
 
i looked at the lens and could not see the focus ring
must be going mad i did see the black speck though
i just took it back as it was 20 minutes old and i will get one some where else
 
I've just had a quick check and the focus ring isn't very obvious. But as you look down on the top of the lens it's between the words image stabalisef and the lens spec. HTH.

The focus ring is the first 'slotted' ring AFTER the front lens! I would have thought it was pretty obvious. It's a great lens too, by the way!

thanks i can see it on an image now but not so easily when i had it in my hands
i think i was more concerned with the speck in the lens

one more question
is this the only lens of this type as i see some advetised as a telephoto lens and some as telephoto zoom lenses
are they all the same model

and thanks for your help as dslr is all new to me

there is only one canon ef-s 55-250 is f4-5.6 mate
 
terryuk - Kerso (do a search for him), will be cheaper and he is a top bloke to deal with.
The price on his last price list I received was £195 + £10 for delivery.
Much cheaper than Jessops.
There are many satisfied Kerso customers on this form.

And for the price, this lens cannot be beaten, it's a cracker and I also owned one for a year.
 
i got it from jessops for 215-00 and i will ring the other branch near me tomorrow as they are showing one in stock
i am lucky 5 branches within 20 miles

Got one two weeks ago from Buyacamera think it was £166, delivered next morning before 10am, also similar price at Warehouse Express, I think Jessops wanted around £235
 
Be careful though as this lens doesn't have full time manual focus - if you twiddle the focus ring while its in AF mode you can force the mechanism and break it....
 
Whoops, I've done that a few times (not on purpose!) when its been in AF mode. Not broken it though as its pretty sturdy!

Its a great lens by the way, as others have said, it punches way above its weight. I bought mine when they first came out and its probably been my most used and versatile lens - it produces very very good shots.

had a look on ebay last night and there was a mint one advertised very local to me
i met up with the seller today and now have a nice 55-250mm canon lens

I agree with the pretty sturdy... as my dropping mine from 5 feet onto the kitchen floor, with a bounce off the skirting for good measure has proved to me... it's still working great. And like others is my most used lens.
