Whilst browsing in Jessops today I spotted a flashgun for a Canon at half the price of a 430EX II.

I suppose my question is:

Are there cheaper alternatives (good ones) to the Canon range of flashes?

Metz and Sigma are good makes (and Nikon) depending on what you are wanting to do with it. As with everything else you tend to get what you pay for though. ;)

A review on flashes in this months photoplus mag. While the 430exII came out as best on test the Sigma EF-530DG super came out as best buy. The cheapest was a Jessops number - 360 AFD and it scored 70% on test, compared to 95% for the 430exII.

The jessops flash
+ was Good all round manual controls and wide angle diffuser.
- was slow recycling time (7 secs) and not compatible with 50D

The Jessops 360AFD is a decent enough flash, worth checking the Jessops website, as sometimes they have deals on them. Have a look in Comet too, some branches had the Canon 430EX II for £116 a while back ;)

I use a Canon flash but if you are buying a 3rd party like Jessops or sigma, check that it supports all the functions that you want as I'm not sure all 3rd party guns do.
