Canon G9/10 or a Lumix LX3/5?

Hi Folks

Have just sold off my DSLR kit to make me more portable in my photography, which was a big part of stopping me taking my camera with me...anyway.

I aim to get a used top end compact and have narrowed to the Lumix LX as I like the 24mm and F2 and the good and trusty Canon G9/10 etc.

What would be your preferances and why? :thinking:

I've just bought a G9 on Fleabay for sub £200 (well £4 under :lol: ) so I know which my choice would be!

If you want the extended range of up to 210mm then the G9 is the obvious choice, but if you are happy with 90mm at the long end and want to stretch the budget then the LX5 is the one.

The best bet, if you haven't already, is to punch them into the DPR comparison guide, and see which features you prefer:

Followed by a quick cross reference on Ebay completed listings to get an idea of the price that you are likely to pay.

You probably wont find many used LX5's about, and they'll be at a premium.

Last year I bought a Canon G11 as a step into 'proper' photography and I have been very pleased with it. I bought one from the USA for £350 with a 8GB class 4 SD. The camera is excellent and is really easy to use, and the IQ is excellent and provides great images even in full auto. The G10 seems to suffer from high ISO noise due to the pixel density on the sensor. For anyone considering a recent Powershot 'G series' I can highly recommend the G11.

I went on holiday from the South of France with a friend with an LX3. The LX3 has similar image quality to the G11. I havent pixel peeped any images to compare, but in general viewing the image quality is as good as the G11, but in a smaller body.

If you would like a smaller body than both the LX3 and G11 have you considered a Canon Powershot S90. This is very similar to the G11 and has the same 10MP sensor. This should be available used for around £200.
 
Just go into a shop and pick them up and buy the one that feels nicest in your hands. They are both very good cameras. As said though the S90 (or S95) is perhaps more equivalent to the LX3/5.
 
I had the same dilema and bought the LX3 as I favoured the 24mm wide end over the longer tele end of the Canon. It's a super wee camera.

Going to sell the LX3 now though as I've bought a GF-1 and it comes with me on walks.
 
I have a G10, and the ISO is only really useable to 200...itmight have 1600 on the dial, but at 400 I feel it is already too noisy and I only use 200 as a last resort. Otherwise it is a stunning camera, 28mm - 140mm field of view is really useful.

However, Nikon have now entered the fray with a beautifullittle version of the same thing, the P7000. It has the same sensor as the D2X had..so image quality is superb (A2 prints with ease). The lens is also more flexible with a 28mm - 200mm field of view. I am tempted as it would mean all my processing matched. The G10 still going strong though....and I have the underwater housing for it opening up even more possibilities. If I was in the market now though, I would be giving the Nikon a really close scrutiny. The Lumix is beautiful, but I would like ot see 24mm- 120 say, to give it that bit more reach.

My hubby has a G11 - I struggle with the controls and don't find the camera very easy to use. I have recently bought an LX5 and that is as easy as hell to use. IQ wise, I hate to admit it, but I reckon that the G11 just takes it. I do however prefer the wide end of the LX5 over the longer end of the G11. Size wise, the LX5 is a little smaller.

I am happy with my LX5 and prefer it over the G11.

Which D2X are you referring to, the only D2X I'm aware of is previous Nikon professional SLR which can't be the one you're referring as its sensor is completely different to the P7000.

I went for the LX3 over the Canon G series equivalent as I preferred the smaller size of the LX3 and its brighter aperture which suited a pocket camera mainly used on nights out.

I'm also after a decent compact and after looking at the G series I've decided to get the Canon S90 as it's much smaller but pretty much the same spec as the G9 :cool:

No it doesn't. The D2x had a 37.2cm² sensor, the P7000's is 0.43cm². Not even close to being the same.

Listened to what was said but the ^ :clap: ^ above made sense to me, so followed it and went and had a hands on of S95, G12 and G11 and LX5.

I am now the owner of a G11 which is in mint condition and cost me less that the LX5 off Amazon, so I am happy and remain a Canon man.

Now lets see If I can sneak off work and have aplay!! ;)
