Hello everyone

Ive got an SLR and various lenses etc to use when i feel like "doing it properly" but I find on some occasions I dont take it with me because I dont want to carry around the bulk of it all!

So i was going to get a compact to carry around on such days, so should a photo op arise I have a camera with me.

My question is this, Canon G9/G10/G11 or Panasonic LX3?

I currently have a canon SLR so im leaning towards the canon but have no experience with either!

Any helpfull advice welcomed :)

Many thanks

Ross

I have a G11 for exactly that reason. Really happy with it.

im definately leaning towards the canon if im honest, due to a knowing my round them fairly well!

Are there any bad points to the G10/G11?

I was looking at the G9 in the for sale section and thinking that would do it?

I really can't fault the G11. Full manual control or just point and shoot.
If I had one complaint (and some probably like it) it would be I don't like the flippy out rotating screen!

Whats it like in full auto (for the when the mrs picks it up to play with lol)??

I have a G10 for exactly the same reason - I can't recommend it enough. If you keep the ISO low then you can get stunning results, but anything higher than ISO 800 is a waste of time. I got the Canon instead of any other as it works with my strobist setup.

It'd be great if only I could just prize it out of my girlfriends hands once in a while...:bonk:

lol your lucky id have my girlfriend nicking it and my dad lol but i cant complain when he lends me nice lens's lol!

The canon good in green mode too then? as thats what gf would use it on all the time!

Honestly I wouldn't know about auto as I've never had it in that mode, I always keep it on Manual. The girlfriend gets told off for putting it in auto, and so has started using manual full time too now. The thing is, it's so easy to use in manual anyway it wouldn't be much of an issue I'm sure.

lol you havent met my gf! when she's driving if i say left she goes right lol im sure if it can produce fantastic images on manual it must do okay in auto for her!

Got any examples to hand taken with it?

And thanks to everyone for your help!

Think ill take the plunge when my xbox sells lol

I've just bought a Canon S90 over the LX3 just due to it being more compact it uses the same sensor as the G11 in a smaller package with a brighter lens but maybe with less features.

I was pretty impressed by it when I took it out NYE.

I cant see the point of a G11 if your going for something small.

i have the g9 and thats the norty camera that led me to upgrade tis a fab camera

Changed G10 for G11 as iso on G10 limiting...I couldn't get acceptable noise levels at more than 200 on G10 but can use 800 on G11, however quality on G10 I'd say marginally better.
Both excellent, depends on your requirements.
Flip out screen handy for low down macro shots.

My girlfriend took this of our daughter recently, not sure if this was manual or auto. Onboard flash was used at 1/4 power. She has edited out some background and done a bit of a touchup on her face, as she's learning photoshop.

Bloody excellent methinks :)

Another vote for the G11.Takes a great pic at low iso settings.I often use it in full auto mode and it works a treat.
I carry it with me all the time and have taken well over 1000 pics with it in the last month or so.The videos aren't HD but still look pretty good.
I've only picked my 7D up once since I got the G11.It's great for family days out etc and those times when a slr makes you stand out a bit too much.

:agree:
I was in the same predicament, i went into jessops to have a look at the G11(and possibly buy) but the guy told me about the Canon S90 which is as above, the only missing features are no optical view finder, 105mm instead of 140mm zoom, WB may be slightly better on the G11 but shoot Raw..

I've got an LX3, and it's an excellent camera. I got it for the the F2 lens and the wide 24mm.

The only negative with it is the small zoom range, so if you need a longer zoom this is not the one for you. If the zoom range is ok, you'll love it. Check out chillimonsters 365 a lot of his shots I think from August onwards til he got his GF1 were taken with the LX3 (I bought his).

I have a Canon DSLR but that wouldn't stop me getting a panny. There are not many disappointed LX3 owners out there.

Good luck

Al

In all fairness the viewfinder on the G11 is dire....however the screen is pretty good.

Its got a few more features granted, but like I say I think if your going compact you need the LX3 or the S90. The G11 is more of a back-up camera.

The LX3 was tempting especially with an arguably better lens and it being wider angle I was ultimately put off by it being slightly larger.

I spent ages deciding but I am happy so far with the S90.

Its also worth noting that a LX3 replacement is due out very soon.

well ive got to say having seen the examples im defiately leaning towards the canon, wow, ive had a few compacts in the past and they've always been nothing but a disapointment! but these photos are incredible!

now the dilema!

used G9?
Used g10? (after saving some extra pennies)
or new G11? (after saving lots of pennies)

Thanks to everyone for all your help and opinions! and Im not meaning to offend anyone discounting the panasonic! I know the LX3 to be a very nice camera, but due to already knowing my way round a canon i was slightly biased from the start!

Cant fault the G10 it has all I want I know the G11 has a flip out screen with a lower res but do I need that No I am happy

yeah im struggling to see much differene between the G11 and G10 spec wise really, the G9 looks very capable and about half the price of the G10 and G11 too!

and ive now confused myself further stumbling across the Sigma DP1 on works website lol

g series cameras take flashes which rocks, espesh with their macro abilities

I know someone who had a g10 for caving because of the hotshoe and the manual control

bad points are size and cost for a night out (the reason my mate gave his up for a normal compact and saving towards a second dslr)

the g11 has sig better high iso performance

yeah I think im set on G series now, read a bit online and it seems they will all perfom pretty fantasticly in most situations, and in the other situations id have an SLR with me!

Leaning towards a G9 due to cost being alot less than G10/G11 would this be a wise move?

Bought my LX-3 today....and i'm wondering the same.....

Don't get me wrong, the LX-3 is stunning.....but the noise puts me off big time, zoom range is what i want, lens is great, what i wanted.......but a G10 is also tempting. At the same time, i bought a compact, because i wanted a compact, the G9,10,11 are not what i call compact.....i find that more awkward then an SLR, i have carried my 1D Mark 3 most days, but its designed to be carried on the strap, etc......a G10, I don't know, not pocketable, I don't carry cameras in a case, i want it available right there and then.....people are different, but that's my reasoning on deciding between cameras in this case. The LX-3 fits in my pocket...just about!!

In terms of image quality, i think the LX-3 has the edge, except maybe over the G11, but are talking a bit more cash. In terms of noise and ISO, the G11 and maybe G10, looks to kick the LX-3's behind

yeah i know the G series are a fair size to be called "compact" but ive had quite a few compacts in the past and they've all just been a let down! and compared to a backpack with an SLR and various lens's batteries cleaning stuff etc the G series are more compact lol! but like you say, still on the larger size!

The LX3 I had a look at at work, and it looks the biz and feels nice in the hand, but im just not sure its worth the extra pennies for a second camera!

I think of the G series at the moment it would be G9 i'd look for due to being around the £200 mark would this be a wise move? or not?

Just sold mine 5 hours ago (G10). It was OK, but didn't use it enough. My 7 year old took this on full auto. Has had a little Topaz added:

Problem with the comparing the G9, is it is a step back from an LX-3, the ISO performance, etc, I don't think up to par with the Lumix. However, the camera itself it lovely, and for £200, I don't think will do you wrong. A G10 goes for same sort of money as an LX-3, and that's what made it tough for me.

And to be honest, i went for looks too.....ha

LX-3 is very pretty.......i even looked at the Olympus Ep-1....but practically, for the money, far too big in comparison, so went with the LX-3

im just wondering wondering whether the money for a G10 or LX3 would be justified or not, unsure how much use it would get till i get it! i think id use it alot on day trips out with the gf etc, but any special occasion id take my SLR! so maybe the money would be best spent on a G9 even though as you say is a backwards step from G10/11 and LX3 but maybe better suited to my useage! and from some results ive seen online from the G9 in good light on iso 80 its a very capable camera!

Why is there so much choice these days, im still not 100% set on any of the lol each have the plus's and minus's!!

yep....know what you mean, im still not hugely convinced what i'll use it for.....got it today, and was tempted to swap it over for a Powershot S90....and still looking at getting money back and going for G10....but then i looka t it, and think it's what i want, and when i want more, i'll take the DSLR.....still would if i was out take the beast that is the 1D and a 50mm F1.4......but on those days it's raining, and don't want to lug it around, i'll put the LX-3 in my pocket, and snap happy, the image quality is stunning. But the G9 will not disappoint either, and is a good £100 cheaper

When I bought my G10 the 2nd hand G9's were as if not more expensive than a brand new G10 because, I believe, the lens range is much more preferred with that on the G9.

thats exactly my feelings, although i dont have the luxury of a 1D yet, just my 1000D and dads 50D when he's not using it!

The lX3 is very nice looking, has a nice retro feel to it, but i feel the G9 does also! and I think for the usage (put in pocket on days out just incase) the G9 will do me well!

If you want to see some other pretty cameras check out the Leica DLux 4 and the sigma DP1! plus some of the more expensive ricohs are very gorgeous!!

working in a camera warehouse is torture i tell you!!

I think im settled on a G9 now, just have to find one!!

Ross, if you work for Warehouse Express I want to be your mate! ;-)
Trouble is I'm a Tractor Boy!

lol working there isnt all that trust me! i pay what you pay online for stuff!

except i get tortured seeing all the stuff i want to buy all day lol

Sounds like torture dude!:gag:

lol it can be at times! when your saving for something and its staring at you on the shelf all day its so tempting just to have a play with it lol!

the plus side is ofcourse seeing alot of gear though!

I've kept my old G9 as a backup to my DSLR and it's great, but budget limitations mean I probably have to part with it in order to fund a new lens :(.. It worked great with my cheap yongnuo strobist setup too

Just bought a Canon S90, it' similar to the LX3 but more compact and a longer range on it

excellent camera considering its size

I've decided im in the hunt for a Canon G9 now due to the price being about right for the useage and the stunning results ive seen online at low iso from it! not too fussed about low light stuff with it!

So a G9 it is!! now just to find one lol!!
