I have a Canon eos 1000D with the original kit lens, I am looking to get a new lens but not sure what one to get. I'm very new to photography so not looking to spend a stupid amount just yet.

I dont have a certain area of photography that I'm in to so I'm looking for a decent all round lens. Please help lol.

I'm guessing by kit lens you've got the 18-55mm?

You might want to give us an idea of what a stupid amount of money is too as what's a stupid amount of money to one person might be pocket change to another.

Also, when you say "all-round" do you mean something with a focal length that lends itself to a variety of situations? Again that's quite subjective.

I used to use a Sigma 18-200mm which gave me good reach and was a good all-rounder for about £200 but the image quality suffered as a result of the construction and the zoom factor.

I've upgraded to a Canon 15-85mm which gives me less reach but the image quality is waaaaay better but it cost around 3 times as much as the Sigma did ;)

Personally I'd stick with your kit lens for the time being, decide what you can/can't do with it and then look at the lens(es) you need to get the shots you want ;)

I assume your kit lens is something like an 18-55mm?

My recommendation would be:

Spend nothing. Get to know the lens you have. Find out what it will and can do, and the same with you. Find out what you can do. Once you know your lens really well, you can make a decision on what might be better than you have.

Lens choice is a personal decision, based on what you want to use it for, you, at the moment don't know. Opinions of others are pointless.

Assuming you've got the 18-55mm kit lens, then the 55-250mm IS lens is the perfect partner lens IMHO. It gives you great focal range coverage, and it's a very good performing lens for its price (approx £170 or so brand new). It's definitely a lens well worth considering as it gives you plenty of options when out and about.

So now you do have an area of photography that you are interested in?

Your money, you decide

Well I need one with decent quality and a bit more range as I'm a mma fighter and I get my Mrs to take pics of my fights and she can't always get cage side
The problem there will likely be the lighting conditions. I'd imagine they will be fairly dark indoors, and for that you'd need a pretty quick lens, perhaps something like the 70-200 F/2.8L, which will possibly be way beyond your budget.

You're not really going to get a fast zoom lens in that budget. Do you mind using a prime (fixed focal length) lens? Not sure how much they go for 2nd hand, but something like the EF 85mm F1.8 might work. It should certainly be quick enough I would guess.

They're worth trying out IMO, as they have a lot of advantages, such as generally being especially sharp, and much better in low light conditions (such as at an MMA fight), but the downside is the lack of a zoom. It does force you into being more creative though, using your feet and your head to try and get a better picture, instead of simply zooming in or out.
