Canon Lens Hood ET-83D - filter query

The idea is that you mount a screw on filter that is the right size for the lens

Then the little door allows for reaching in with finger to turn the rotating part of the polarising filter......i. e. You don't fit the filter through the lens hood 'door' ;)

I use a hoya pro polarising filter on mine. Take the hood off to fit of course and then use the little window to rotate it.

IMO try it but because of the thickness of the polarising filter (compared to others) it may cause vignetting.

As @Box Brownie says it may cause vignetting. I expect it will fit, but I usually remove the filter before I add the polariser because of the extra degradation in quality.

I only use protective filters when I'm at the beach these days. Otherwise I don't have them on. I often use my 100-400 on the beach, so it's often an extra fiddle before I go out to put the polariser on.

Out of interest is your filter a 77mm chunkier one, as my filters seem to be 77mm slimline and they are not wide enough to fit

Not too sure what you mean "......not wide enough to fit" as in fit what?

A 77mm screw on filter should fit all lenses requiring a 77mm screw threaded filter.
Plus AFAIK slimline filters are not intended to be stacked i.e. they are only threaded to put on the lens, the outer face does not have a screw thread to accept another lens i.e. they are slimmer because of that design.

I'm getting confused with this hood, some images online I saw suggested the filter screwed into the hood that was what I tried. If they only screw onto the lens then no problem
 
Mine is called a Hoya Pro 1 Digital Filter Circular PL 77mm. It does have a thread on the outside too so I guess it is not a slimline one though it says it's low profile.
It screws on to the end of the lens as per usual - doesn't screw into the hood.

Brilliant thats similar to a UV one I have so I will get myself one of these. Thanks for clarifying about the end of the lens, the article I read online was misleading to say the least !
