Canon offers locking mode dial upgrade for 5D Mark II, 7D

i can think of better things to spend $100 US on ..... beer comes to mind!
 
Think I'll stick to the existing dial.

Design looks similar to the locking dial on the old film EOS 100 / Elan. If the dial was forced whilst locked the mechanism would break and you couldn't change the mode at all with the dial freewheeling. Sounds a dumb thing to break but it was really easy to do (I know I did it to an EOS 100 I bought off here about 1 minute after receiving the camera in the post!).
 
Ewww...I had a quick try on a 60d at a local canon pro day and didn't like it one bit! one extra thing to do when quickly changing settings etc...infact I wish they did away with the whole mode dial altogether as I really preferred the 1 series way when I had a quick play on a 1dIV.
 
Kind of handy, I've moved mine by mistake. But I'd rather they moved the AF back-button left a bit :D
 
Pentax have introduced a locking mode dial on the new K-5.

I thought it would be quite handy as I have on occasions obviously knocked the dial when putting the camera in/taking out of the bag.

I absolutely hate it though .. a right royal pain having to fiddle with the button when changing modes.
 
I have found on several ocassions that the mode dial on my 7D has moved, and I don't always notice immediately. I think it happens when removing it from my bag.

However $100 is a joke, it should be done for a nominal charge as it feels like a design fault to me.
 
Actually I think this is a good idea. Price - well its not cheap, but if that is fitted and guaranteed, then it covers labour and parts. I've found I've moved my dial several times, and for some reason happened more on the 7D than the 50D
 
I'm forever clicking the wheel on mine, normally from M to B. As such I've missed a few shots - to avoid that happening I think the price (although expensive) is worth it - however I do agree that it should've had one fitted from new or featured the same system my 1D has.

It's a feature I've wanted on my cameras since I started with digital photography, 40D, 7D and 5DII. It doesn't happen very often and most times I spot it but I have missed some shots which is frustrating. Like Dave said above the worst is when it clicks round from M to B. Even at the price quoted I may be tempted because I intend on keeping my current setup a while.
 
It could be handy on my 7D. The power switch on mine is quite stiff and I have moved the dial a notch on a few occasions just by turning the camera on. Not a huge problem but it can be a pest if I don't notice.
 
On safari this year I had my camera on a ledge just behind the driver's seat. Was perfect place but, for some reason, whenever I picked it up I would move the mode dial, normally from Av to M. A real pain when I didn't notice, especially when a leopard walked past.

But I do like being able to instantly switch to C1 and C3 - which I have setup, one for movies, one for emergency default shooting. It would be nice to have the locking optional.
