Yes
I was having a little play with the Camera and 50mm f/1.8 at home last night...trying to lean about DOF and the like. I took a shot in AV mode that was very dark at f/4. I decided to try it in "P" mode and the image was 100 times better. When I looked at the EXIF data the Shutter speed, apperture and ISO levels were identical for both shots....One was very dark and had alot of red, the other was a nice even image.

WHY?

Are you willing to mail us the images so we can have a look?

I'm not sure if you can post it with EXIF and all that and keep it below 200Kb:shrug:

You could put it on flickr then post link to read the EXIF

oops

Are you using the same metering mode in AV and P?

That shouldnt happen.I would suspect that one or more of your settings got changed accidentally when you changed from Av to P.

Did the flash fire in P mode ?

It was very late last night/this morning when I did this and they are just snaps.. I have just noticed the only difference between these is the shutter . Oh and it was the 24-105 not the 50mm lens..I think Exif should be attached....Fingers crossed...I'll get me coat!

However this does raise a different question, In these modes, The camera has chosen different shutter speeds for the same appature....

I may have another go later.

P mode will chose the best shutter speed in order you can hand hold it.

Av will select whatever shutter speed to give a balance exposure (18% grey).

shutter time is different

Using the EX580II: and 24-105:

AV mode: f/4 =1/6 Sec

Program mode f/4 =1/60 Sec

Using the EX580II: and 50mm f/1.8:

AV mode: f/4 =1/60 Sec

Program mode f/4 =1/6 Sec

Without flash 50m Prime: I did the Program mode first then set the apperture to match. The results are pretty consistant without the flash.

The shutter speed on pic 3 & 4 is wrong.

Am I missing something here 'cos apart from the shutter speeds being transposed in shots 3 and 4, the results are exactly what I would expect. If we're talking about the orange tint in the Av shots, that's because in Av mode the shutter speed is much slower and light from both ambient (which I'm guessing is tungsten) and flash has been recorded whereas the shot taken in P mode has a much higher shutter speed so the main source of light is now just the flash. Or wasn't that the question?:D

If you use flash in P Mode, the slowest flash sync speed is automatically selected, and the flash only acts as the main light source. When the shutter speed drops below a safe hand holding speed, flash is used as the main light source in much the same way a point and shoot camera operates

If you use flash in AV mode you can choose any slower shutter speed you like and the flash just acts as a fill with the camera still metering from the ambient light.

Thanks CT.....I think I understand now.....

Brocks, I think the 'Av' and 'Program' need swapping too.

:coat:

Given CT's and Raymond's responses....I'll leave it be. ;)
