Hi Everyone.

REALLY need your help with something!!! I had another photographer out on an assignment today, he's come back to me with the RAW files. But I'm a Nikon user and he's canon. Now if I try to put the files into Photoshop or lightroom, they won't work. I just get an incompatable error message.

Any canon wizz's out there able to tell me if I need a plugin or something?

Thanks

If it is from one of the newer Canons you may need to update Adobe Camera Raw to the latest version for compatibility

Not sure about lightroom but photoshop requires a plugin, which can be got from Adobe's website if you're lucky.

What camera are the files from, and what version of photoshop are you running?

Adobe don't tend to release plugins to run files from later hardware on earlier software (so you have to buy their latest version when you upgrade your gear ). For example I couldn't use CS2 to edit my 40D RAW files as CS3 was out when the camera was released, so no plugin for the earlier software.

Last option would be to borrow a copy of the bundled Canon DPP software off someone, just to get them converted to Tiffs or something more usable..

Lightroom 2.4 will handle any Canon DSLR released to date. As for Photoshop, if you have an old version you should be able to use Adobe's free DNG converter software to convert the Canon raw files to DNG format and then process the DNG files in CS1/CS2. If you have CS3 or CS4 then hopefully a free update to the latest ACR will have you sorted.

RawTherapee is a free raw processor that you could also use and even Picasa can handle Canon raw files, although editing is limited and there is no colour management.

Load in the Canon DPP software that came with the camera he has and that will sort you out quicker than looking for updates.

AS far as I know there is NO Plug-in just need the latest ACR.
OP do not say which Lightroom or Photoshop he has

I won't claim to be the oracle on this subject, however looking at the file downloaded to use my 350D RAW files with CS2, it's zipped in a folder called "Camera_Raw_3_4" but the actual file contained within is a plug-in. So it appears they're one in the same and we're both right :p

Looking here there's a hint that someone may have got a later version of ACR to work with CS2.. apparently the last version of ACR to work with CS2 was 3.7, which still doesn't support the 40D (or later cameras, one would assume).

Of course this may all be academic, depending in the OP's software and the type of files she needs to open..

Some bits found on my travels which may be of use:

ACR 3.7 for windows (last update for CS2)

ACR 4.6 for windows (latest update for CS3)

Obviously they're avalable for the Mac too, if you're into that sort of thing..

open Photoshop. click on help tab. click on updates. download updates. done. i had the same problem opening RAW cr2 files from canon, but this way fixed it.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I have Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2.1

No access to the photographers DPP software as we live a fair distance from each other and he didn't have it on him.

I'll try a couple of updates and the Adobe Camera RAW update and see if that works.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I have Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2.1

I'm curious - why would you still be on LR 2.1? What happened to 2.2, 2.3 and now 2.4? Why not just upgrade, for free, when the updates are released. As well as compatibility for new cameras there are typically bug fixes and/or performance enhancements included in the updates. I have LR set to check automatically for updates. When it finds one then I install straight away, having quickly checked forums for reports of new (nasty) bugs.

You can have it check automatically. Just tick the box...

When it finds a new update it leads you to a download page where you can grab the new file to install at your convenience.
