Yes you can but it won't give you the digital zoom to suit the x1.5 difference in the focal length compared to what it was designed for ie film Canon cameras.

There is no 1.5x digital zoom or focal length difference, there is a 1.6x crop factor though. These are very often mixed up and confused, however where flash is concerned it makes no difference in this case.
That is another question and still completely different to calling crop factor a difference in focal length though. What you are asking is also dependant on the lens, some do not transmit distance information in the first place
