Yes
I have currently got a Canon EOS 1000D - it's a great camera but now I want to take my photogrpahy a stage further and become semi-professional...and therefore I feel the time is right for a trade in. I would like to stick with Canon but am not sure where to 'jump' to in the range. Can anyone advise me please?

Do you have a budget available? When you say semi Pro, in what type of field? What kit do you have already?

The answers to these questions will help people give a better informed answer

I am currently setting up a business which takes largely black and white photos of children...out on location. We also have a studio (thanks to a spare room in my husband's office block!) and are going to start taking photos there in the future (after we've mastered this aspect of course!). My husband will also use the camera for product photographs for his business.
I have got a Canon Zoom lens EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III ESM, Canon EFS 18-55mm, and sep flash (only Jessops!).
Budget wise I have no idea to be honest. We have got to buy studio kit so am hoping that if I bundle that all with a new camera we will be able to get a good deal from somewhere. Am happy to consider second hand, if you think it'd be worthwhile!
Thanks
Jo

If you're doing studio work the lighting is entirely under your control, so you can shoot at low ISO for minimal noise. I would recommend that a better lens would be an better option and suggest looking at the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX (unless you can afford the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L).

Plus if your running a studio you will need spare bodies and flash heads just in case of failure.

Wow - Canon 5DMKII has amazing reviews, even if it is a little pricey. My OH has to buy another camera for his 'business use' so I will get the new one, and he'll have the EOS1000D. May just have to recommend this one. I presume my other lens will fit it (sorry to be naive!).
May just go for the lens though if you think that would be a better option. Oh the decisions. Is the Canon version markedly better than Sigma?
Thanks again experts!

If you're going to get a 5DMKII you really do need good glass to get the most out of the camera. Add a 24-70/2.8 and you've got a pretty good start up kit.

So far that's a budget of about £2.5k - There's loads more that would help to make your life easier - An off camera flash and reflector for example would also be things I would be looking at for portrait shots.

I know nothing about portraits, but I'm sure there are those who can help you spend a load more!!

Just spoken to my OH and apparently 2.5k is above budget....bother the budget!
May look into lens upgrade or an alternative...more help needed please!

To jump from a 1000D to a 5D2 is heck of jump in all sorts of ways, not just in terms of budget  It's full frame, with a sensor more than twice the size of the one you have.

And very nice it is too, but I don't think you have to go that far just yet. I would upgrade your lenses first, possibly with one eye on full frame at a later date, and then the camera when you have a better idea of what you want to do and the tools you need to do it.

If you are going to specialise in portrait photography you will, at some point want to go full frame. With this in mind it's a good idea to upgrade your glass to a Canon 24-70L. Your existing 18-55 will not work on a full frame body and i don't think the 75-300 is at all suitable. It's a budget lens and sadly is just not sharp enough. Keep in mind that even for location shoots you'll need extra off camera lighting. Look at the lighting forum for help and ideas.
Perhaps you should establish a budget and split between camera gear and lighting. It'll help us to help you more.
