Canon USA going after grey importers.

There have been a few in the UK over the years having counterfeit serial numbers on grey market goods. Maybe more than folk realise?

Safety wise, power leads/batteries/chargers etc that are counterfeit & manufactured by third parties, are the most worrying.

It seems that the specific allegations aren't so much about greyness per se, but relate to alleged practices such as changing or removing serial numbers, supplying counterfeit and potentially unsafe chargers, etc. If proven, that's pretty blatantly illegal. I think it's sloppy reporting to say they're going after grey importers.

This is actually very interesting because it's specifically Canon USA who are claiming they have an exclusive right to distribute Canon products in the States. Whilst many grey importers are selling genuine Canon products rather than counterfeit goods, the mere fact that some of the less reputable importers are selling dodgy goods is enough to cloud the waters.

I can see they winning this. It's very similar to the case Hershey launched earlier this year to prevent other companies importing Cadbury products from over here. They're claiming that they have the exclusive licence to sell Cadbury-branded products in the US. In this case it's actually a different product in that Hershey don't import Cadbury stuff but rather sell their own (total rubbish) branded as Cadbury and hence they feel the importers are clouding the market, confusing customers and damaging their sales. Canon USA's complaint seems very similar.
