Canon walkabout options

Folks,

Fairly new to dslr land... but got the bug.

I have a Canon 450D with the kit 18-55 and a cheap Tamron 70-300

Considering my first lens upgrade.

I find the 18-55 quite restrictive so looking for something a little longer as a general walk about. I don't really want to lose the wide end so would like to stick around the 17/18 as a maximum.

I guess the options are

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC OS HSM
Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM (fix issues in DPP?)
Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS (fix issues in DPP?)

Tamron 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di ll LD Aspherical (IF) Macro

I don't really need a super zoom as I will look later to replace the 70-300

I doubt I will be printing in A4 very often let alone A3

Any thoughts on which will deliver the best IQ ?

Cheers

Hi there

From what I've heard (never used one) the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro may be your best option.......
It has a great reputation.

What is your budget?

I added the Canon 18-200 as I missed that one..

I guess the budget is what it takes....

I would rather spend the money and get something decent, than skimp and get something that I replace in 6 months because it doesn't deliver.

Looking around these are all less than 500 so should be workable...

cheers

My wife has the 28-135 Canon and is very happy with it, has a good range for walkabout, not very wide but if you can live with that a good all-rounder.

im quite liking my recent purchase which is sigma 28-300 :)

Out of all of those choices, I think the Sigma 27-70mm will give the best IQ, however I find a longer focal length more useful for a walkabout. I have the Canon 18-200mm and am very pleased with it. I actually dropped the camera straight down on the front of the lens which broke the UV filter and damaged the camera, but the lens was unmarked and still works perfectly. Very robust!

I have both the Sigma 17-70 and the Canon 17-85 IS
Both are good lens but I tend to use the Canon one more now I have added it as the IS adds a cpl of stops any how.

Thanks for all the suggestions...

I do really want a 17/18 rather than 24/28 (1.6x on a crop)

and yes was thinking about the canon due to the IS.

How does the IQ compare between the Sigma 17-70 and the Canon 17-85 ?

Cheers
