Hi, Yep i am a novice , i have a Olympus E520 and a Panasonic fz28 , ,i have looked through both books and cant seem to find how to set either of them on B&W , have i gone blind , daft or just really stupid , or all 3 .:cuckoo: , can one of you nice people please tell me what i am missing apart from a brain .;)

i can't offer any help with those 2 cameras i'm afraid.... but you may find it's better to take all your images in colour and then change them afterwards with photo processing software to B&W. You'll be in full control of everything then... if you start off with a shot taken in B&W then there's no changing it to colour at any point after that.
good luck stu

It sounds as if you may not have that option with those 2 cameras.....if it's not mentioned in the instruction books then the only way is to convert from colour to B+W in post processing with something like Photoshop or Lightroom

shoot raw and you can change from black and white back to colour. but i would also say shoot in colour and convert in pp, it'll give you far more creative control.

I will do as suggested , still not very good at editing but i am sure i will manage , as i hope to take some photos that i think will be better in B&W .
Thanks very much for your replies . :thankyou:

just to be clear i don't own either of these cameras but used to sell them, so...

the e-520 should be in this option
5353286022_c9c972b732.jpg

called Monotone

tho if memory is correct it's not available in all modes on the camera.

couldn't get a pic of the menu on the fz28 but if you go into button menu/set and scroll down the first folder (camera not spanner) probably on the 3rd page you have 'COLOR MODE or COLOR EFFECT' and in there you should find B/W.

I always wait till i'm at the computer to convert to B&W as can play alittle more with contrast and brightness to get better image.

please tell me if i've failed

Spot on for the E520:thumbs:

it's not a particularly good B&W though, just the same as turning the saturation to 0 in PP.

Try Picassa, although it's not the worlds most powerful package, it is very user friendly.

EDIT: I find I have to boost shadows to get a nice contrasty black and white.
