Card Reader Question

If I delete something off the card through the card reader, is it recoverable?

Basically, I've lost an entire shoot!!! I was about to edit it for a viewing, and I just can't find it anywhere. My usual workflow after a shoot is to plug in the card and dl to a 'current shoots' folder on my pc, then I check it's there, make a copy, then I delete whats on the card - from 'my computer' I open the removeable drive folder, and in there is the DCIM folder, which I erase.

For the life of me I don't know what I've done here - though the day in question was a busy day in the studio...but the shoot is just not there!!!

Before I make a very embarrasing call to my client....anyone got a miracle suggestion?

The only program I have used to recover deleted files is Recuva. Always works well for me, just do not write to the card before you try to recover anything, also it is usually best to recover any files to the hard drive rather than back on to the card.
Free download http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Recuva is very good, if you haven't used the card since you will likely be in luck.

I use a professional package called Stella Pheonix which will basically recover pretty much anything from drives or cards if they are readable. Sandisk cards come with a FREE recovery package. If you buy a sandisk card it comes with a serial number and you just download the file.

Just ask if someone has bought multiple cards and has a spare serial number. I gave mine away a while ago.

What if I have used the card, several times? :'(

It depends on how far you used the card and how many images were on the shoot as to how many you can retrieve. If the shoot was 200 images and you have shot 15 then you are likely to get most of them back.

Shoot was about 100 images, and that card has since been used for a further 5 shoots, which will have been about the same amount of images.

Unlikely you will get anything back then sorry!

I would still download and run Recuva, just don't expect much :(

Have you searched everywhere on the PC? they may be there somewhere.

It is worth having a go. Don't give up until you have tried Recuva

Where can I get that, sounds useful but I can't see it on their website.

Who? Sandisk or Stella?

All the Sandisk cards I have bought have had a card inside the packaging with the code and download address for mac and pc.

agreed.

when you delete files generally the data is still there but it marks the area of disk within a small database on the drive as available to be written to.

once those areas of disk have been overwritten your data 99.9% of the time that data will be lost.

hell, its worth a shot though..

Depends how big the card is. If you've filled it five times, it's very unlikely. But if you've used a tenth of the card five times...
