Cases - Accessories

I'm probably going to get my first dSLR pre-owned.

Now, I have a tendency to look at boxed ones, that comes with all the accessories that came with the camera when originally bought.

But, that is not necessarily smart. (One muses.)

Now, if I got a case, that would give me the scope to avoid being quite so bothered about seeking a box with all the original parts.

Okay, so what is the situation with obtaining a camera case for the camera one ends up purchasing? If I got a Canon 20D (say) what gives regarding a camera case?

What type of case are you looking for Richard? I assume you don't mean a rigid, metal, case for the body and lenses, and I don't think you can get the ready use cases that used to be available for film SLRs. Most people seem to use some sort of backpack, or just carry the camera by the strap or a hand strap. You can get 'pouch' type bags too, but I think they'd be awkward with a DSLR.

I wouldn't touch a used camera if it didn't come with ALL the original bits. First off its a good indication as to how well the camera has been looked after and secondly most, if not all, of the "bits" are essential.

With regards to cases, I assume you mean the case that fits to the camera body, I don't bother and I doubt many do. Get yourself a decent camera bag instead.

Are you wanting a case for storage at home or for carrying around when shooting?

For the former, you don't really need a special case (or indeed the box) - most people just store the camera in one of their camera bags. Even entry-level bodies are pretty robust and will withstand the odd bump. The thing to watch out for are scratches to the LCD or lenses - a soft padded camera bag will protect the former, and lens caps will protect the latter.

Maplin do some good hard cases with pick'n'pluck foam if that's what you mean, useful for storage but not very practical for flaneur avec l'appareil-photo. I use a hard case for storing MF gear at home, but always transfer the DLSR or MF camera gear I intend to use to a suitable shoulder bag or backpack when heading out the door.

A bag is the way to go. You'll start collecting extra bits of kit just as soon as you start doing photography. Everybody has done this since 1826. Having something for your sparelensbatterymemorycardfilterotherfiltercleaningpenthingwotyoupickedupforafiverthatmaybeveryuseful, and a contraceptive just in case, will pay dividends in the long run.

Oh, a camera bag. I forgot about that. :c) I was just imagining my prized possessions in a case - for some reason.
