Hi All,
I,ve been asked to photo some single ceramic tiles so the jpegs can be imported into a CAD programme for bathroom design.Wondered if anyone has any tips for me on lighting and settings. Not sure weather to use natural or interior lighting!

Thanks Steve

Natural light has to be excellent or the tile will never look good. By the way why would they need jpg for CAD design? Can't they draw a tile or is it to make it look realistic?

If you take a picture of a tile, I would suggest taking it from overhead so the tile is flat on a white background. This is so the CAD designer can easily cut-out the tile and resize as they need it.

Still not sure how a jpg is going to look on a 3D diagram.

Please keep me informed, I am intrigued in more ways than you think.

I presume they want the tiles appearance to import as a 'texture' onto the cad model, this would be in the form of a jpeg IIRC. this would 'skin' onto the flat tile surface.

I often put textures onto my CAD drawings, by using a wood texture (for example) on the computer model it can greatly improve pupils understanding as it helps them to visualise how their piece of wood is going to be transformed into a box etc.

I presume the idea will be that each cad drawn 'tile' will have the jpeg on the visible face so when imported into the cad model of the kitchen/bathroom the tiles have the correct appearance, however unlike normal tiles they obviously wont reflect the physical texture of the tile and how this effects the light bouncing off of it.

Hi Tom,
The pics are not for the CAD designers, there for my boss who uses the package to show prospective customers what their bathroom will look like. The package shows a 3D rendition of a flat design and comes with templates of different tiles but we want to show the tiles we sell in the shop,so they have to be imported. The programme is fairly idiot proof and has to be easy to use! Am I making sense????
Thanks for the tips on the shots if you have any more I would be grateful!!!

Regards Steve

Not sure about that! I've a feeling this maybe more complicated than I thought..............

I bet he sets the CAD to show full tiles eh Steve, no silly raking cuts or bogs to cut around.

Will try and take a couple myself as an example, post them tomorrow.
