CF card problems - lines across imagaes

A couple of weeks ago, I took the advice of a few people (Please not, I am not blaming anyone on here) and sent off for a couple of extra CF cards - Kingston Memory 8GB - to ensure that I had enough memory for an upcoming holiday.
Anyhow, we went out yesterday, and I decided to pop one of the new cards in just to make sure it was OK. I shot around 40 images in a local nature reserve, and reveiwed them at the time, deleting any rubbish - nothing seemed to be wrong. When I got home, I looked at them closer - zooming in, and then noticed slight lines across the images.
This morning I downloaded them to Elements, and every image bar one, has thick black lines running through the middle.
So, I will post three of the results, and hope that someone here may be able to shed a little light on the problem - faulty card/knock off copy/camera (although, I have tried the old card and it is fine)
Cheers
Andy

The only "good image"

The only image with very slight corruption (thin red and green bars)

This image is typical of all the rest, exhibiting obvious black bars.

If you've tried an old card in your camera with the same lens / settings etc and you have no issues at all, then it would suggest a card issue to me as everything else has remained static and not changed...

Did you format the new card for your camera ?

I'd be returning them I think as faulty - where did you get them from ?

Hi, I used these people:

http://www.memorybits.co.uk/search_result.php?keywords=kingston&sort=2a&page=2

I did format the card, and have checked the camera this morning again with my old Sandisk card (nearly four years old, and over 10K images in total) and thank goodness that is OK!

As I said before, this is not an attempt to blame anyone, simply to attempt to see if anyone else has had problems similar to this.

Hi

Andy, If you have checked and rechecked everything and simply by putting in your old Sandisk card, you have no issues, then personally, I'd be contacting them this morning and returning them...

You got them for a holiday coming up - are you going to be comfortable using them (I wouldn't be).

When are you away, do you have the chance to order some new cards - my advice, I'd buy Sandisk or Lexar..

Do hope you get it sorted and have a god holiday

Cheers Andy, yes I will be contacting them this morning, and you are right, I will be buying Sandisk (again - why did I change:thinking:). The holiday is in mid July, so plenty of time to get things sorted out OK.

Plenty of time then - good job you checked them out...

I've used a kingston cf card for ages. Mine's been fine! Sounds like a duff or counterfeit batch.

Just a quick update. I have only been able to Email the company concerned, so that will take time. I have also contacted Kingston, and they would like me to send images of the front/back of the card and the same for the packaging.
I have had a bit of bad luck ordering things online over the past couple of months - car parts, clothes, electrical kit - after 15 years of not having a problem, and a few dodgy transactions in succession is so frustrating, and tends to make you paranoid.

Hopefully you get it sorted quickly.

Be good to hear what Kingston say aswell, it sounds like they want to make sure it's a genuine card

I have received an Email back from Memorybits (otherwise known as Rok Memory/Zoombits - based in Jersey), and their terms and conditions in the text look a bit dubious. Now, I know that any goods which are not of merchantible quality should result in a complete refund, but as they are based in Jersey, is this still the case?

This is the Memorybits text:

Please note you will need to be logged in or will be required to log in to complete this stage of the returns procedure. Please kindly note our Terms and Conditions for Returns/Refunds

“To qualify for a refund or exchange the faulty product must be free of faults caused by accident, neglect, misuse or normal wear and tear. Items need to be returned using our Returns process. You must follow the procedure that will determine if the item can be returned, if so you will be provided with a RMA number. If your return does not contain the RMA number and in the form prescribed during the returns process your item may not be processed and you may lose your right to a refund. You are liable for the safe return of the item, we recommend that you return the item using tracked and/or recorded mail. The cost of returns is borne by you unless we have agreed otherwise. In any event the refund of postage paid by you the customer to return the item is limited to a maximum of £3.50 if it qualifies for a replacement within the first 45 days after dispatch, thereafter the cost of returning the item is borne by you the customer. We test every item returned to us, once received it will be inspected and tested by our test centre. A replacement will be authorised should a fault be found. In the event of a replacement not being available an alternative product will be offered or a credit note issued, in certain circumstances a full refund will be offered. If no fault can be found by our test centre, the item will be returned to you at your cost plus an administration charge not exceeding 10% of the original net price paid by you for the item. This charge will need to be paid prior to dispatch. In such circumstances you will not be refunded for the cost of return. If you decline to pay these costs within 30 days of been notified that there was no fault and the resultant cost of return we may dispose of the items as we see fit”

In order for us to deal with your return as quickly and efficiently, please provide as much information/issues you are having with the faulty item as possible when completing the above process.

Once you have completed this process, you will receive an email within 3 days with either a fix or an RMA returns authorisation number.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. We thank you for your time, patience.

Kind Regards

I have noticed that there are a few disgruntled ex customers if you Google Zoombits.

I can't help :( I had exactly the same problem some years ago.. so many years ago that I cant recall how i fixed it... BUT .. the one wiht the black lines... look in camera and zoom in.. can you see the black lines in your camera screen... before downloading.. i seem to recall the pics where OK in camera and the pics where being corrupted on the computer...

but these really are distant memories.. exact same problem... my only suggestion is ...can you see those lines in the camera.. i mean on the original.. dont mean put back on card and look :)

Hi Tony, yes, I could see them in camera, not as broad black lines, but only as a slight corruption ( a bit like a "mini" version of the type which neil_g linked to in his reply) when I zoomed in, not with a normal size preview. I have also taken some more images with my old Sandisk card today and downloaded them, and there are no problems at all.
I am going to get the other card out of its packaging and see if it is the same.

Andy have you got a another camera you can try these cards in to see if the same problem arises?

Nope, afraid not.
There is worse news, I have opened the second Kingston card, taken it out today, and shot around 100 images. When I previewed them normally in camera they were OK, but when I zoomed in, the multicoloured bands appeared on virtually every one.
I have now downloaded them through Elements, and sure enough, the black horizontal bands are on nearly every one, ruining what should have been a lot of good shots.

Please note:

I have taken images since then with a Sandisk Ultra 4GB card, and there have been no problems, just perfection as you would expect.

So, it is not the camera?

Which would then suggest / confirm a card issue.

I was going to suggest it maybe a downloading issue, but if you're seeing them in camera straight away, then I can only think it is a card issue ...

Here are the latest images from card number two. To say that I am very frustrated does not even come close.

On this image there are three grey dots on the top black band. This is where I tried to clone out the black band, and instead of using the background colour, it simply turned grey?

I tried to clone out the blue and red lines on this image, but it would not let me.

Here is an update at last on the faulty memory cards. I used the second card and it turned out to have the same problems as the first card. I then contacted MemoryBits by Email, but the reply left me in no doubt that I may not get a replacement.
I then contacted Kingston direct, and they asked me to send the cards back to them. I did this and received two new cards a few days before going on holiday, and for this I am very grateful to them.
I am still concerned about the fact that wto cards from the same supplier should have an identical problem, so I shall contact Kingston today, to see if they can tell me what was wrong with the cards.
I have used both the replacement cards and they appear to be working fine, so at least it is not a problem with the camera.

Glad you got it sorted and looks like you received good customer service from Kingston.

I suspected Kingston wanted images of the actual card (before you mailed them back to them direct) to see if they were fakes or not.
Either way, glad you got sorted.

They did indeed, and following that they Emailed me a return form.

I was impressed by them, no quibbling and they sent out the two replacement cards by return post.
I have used other products from them in the past and been satisfied - extra RAM for the PC.
