Hey guys,

bit of a random one but there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum..

im moving house next week and would like to know whats involved in changing the swing direction of a double glazed upvc front door.

curently it opens into the reception room from the porch but is a little awkward. i would like it to open into the porch.

is this potentially a nightmare job? and what could be involed. obviously you arent able to view the door space. so just an outline would be great.

my father has installed many upvc windows, conservatorys and door but before i ask him i would like a little knowledge on the subject myself.

thanks in advance

Matt

As far as I was aware the only go one way too. When I tried at my old house there was no way to do it. Could depend on the door though.

Go ask your old man I'd say :)

Hard to say without seeing the door. If it is the type with concealed hinges it may be possible to take the door + hinges off, mount it on the other side and move the locking mechanism.
Snag is that a lot of upvc doors are factory assembled and come as a complete unit for installation. Tampering with that has a lot of potential for a major balls up.
I'd make use of your father's experience.

It's easier if you can move the whole door and frame assembly. We need pics.

There's a reason front doors open inwards:

If someone knocks, and you open the door - you'll smash them in the face with it!!!

It would normally involve removing the entire frame and refitting it the other way round.

thats all you can do as the profile for the door will only fit the profile of the frame one way ..........

As has been said - you can only do it by removing the frame/door and turning the whole lot round. But also bear in mind that the hinged side will also be swapped so look at the way the door will now open in to the porch.

thanks for you replies guys, much apprieciated.. ill chat with my dad and see if hes able to do it for me. but reading your replies has giving me more of an idea of whats involved, so many thanks

it should be no more dificult than cutting round the sealant and removing the fixings , take your time to put the frame back in square and bobs your uncle :)

i think the seals are in the inside...
we shall live with it for the time being and see how we get on... i think we might just be moretempted to have it open to the other side, ie left to right instead of right to left.... maybe that should be easier!
