Chill out holiday, LX5 or D700

I'm off to Bali in a couple of weeks for a much needed chill out break. Do I take my D700 plus various lenses or do I buy an LX5 to keep it simple? What you guys reckon?
 
Depends how chilling photography is for you... :) I'd take both and see what kind of mood I am in.

Why not keep it simple and take the D700 with the 50mm 1.4. No lens decisions to make, super quality and lightweight..ish...
 
D700 - no contest.

I have a gf1 that takes great pics, but i ALWAYS seem to take the D700 and NEVER think that it is too big or heavy, but I do know that if I do get a real keeper, the quality will be there, without question.

I agree with Trevor about just taking the one lens, but for me it would have to be the 24 - 70 f2.8 :love:

I went to Kazakhstan and took my GF1 and LX5 and left my DSLR at home and didn't regret it.

I didn't want to look like a geek with a big camera and the beauty of smaller cameras is that these days they really are good enough for decent sized whole image shots.

So I say go for the small option.
 
I'd take the lot and just decide on a day by day basis what to take out with me depending on what I'm doing. I have an LX3 which is great but it's still nowhere near as good as my DSLR. I'm not sure I'd enjoy my holiday as much if I was fretting about missed photo opportunities.
 
I have just returned from Sevilla and opted to take the LX5 instead of the DSLR kit. I was really pleased I did that. Fitted in a pocket, didn't make me stand out from a crowd for undesirable lowlifes and took some great pictures to boot. I bought the LX5 for this purpose in mind, where I really did not want to lug my DSLR around, fitted the bill perfectly. Lovely little camera.
 
LX5 (or other hi-end compact) all the way.

Am totally convinced that this is a way better holiday solution after last year.

If you are going to Bali it is highly likely that you will spend a lot of time at the beach. When going on those type of holidays i prefer taking both my DSLR and compact. The big boy stays at the hotel most of the time and the compact goes to the beach (make sure you have a waterproof bag all the time though as you may not feel comfortable leaving it with your stuff when you go for a swim).

The DSLR will be nice once you 've spent a couple of days and you start finding interesting things you would like to take a more creative approach with ;) I tend not to take anything else other than a superzoom lens, but quality is not that good so a 24-70 may be a good idea..
 
If you already have one (or the cash to buy one), compact every time. If the money could be spent on something else I'd go for the DSLR and a mid wide prime, 50mm on FF works well.
