Chrome: Not playing mp4 best alternative format?

Without certain plugins, dependant on operating system and version, mp4 wont play on chrome.

Can anyone suggest a good alternative. These are for single use videos, so I don't want them on a public platform like youtube. I have to enable them direct from my website.
