Hi, filling up the rental before returning it to MERCEDES where I had my dear old S for an MOT test :

Sad background : My S failed the MOT test, because emissions were too high. The MERCEDES garage could not help me. It did not have the required cat-tester any more,
which supports the location of the failure. A best-guess approach would take long and is expensive. The cat alone is € 3000, without labour.

My solution: I located a MERCEDES garage specializing in old-timers, and I will make an MOT and service appointment with them.

MERCEDES and many other firms in Germany suffer from a skilled labour shortage. Today, one gets an appointment in 3 - 4 weeks.

Buying a new car would not help much ... ---

Was your car rental with Enterprise? Always reckon cars with WI plates are Enterprise and EU = Avis.

An Ariel sports car in East Devon...

You need Clarkson's jowls to be able to drive that one convincingly....
You wouldn't get me into it!

I learned my lesson more than 50 years ago, when I was driven round Brands Hatch in a home assembled Gilbern Genie! :wideyed:

A sad sign of modern times, Immo. Garages used to employ mechanics who could diagnose problems and fix things, now they hire technicians who can only plug things in and replace faulty parts.

When I've had my car serviced at a main dealer and had a loaner, it's always been a better (well, more expensive!) model than mine and the fuel's been "free", although the cost over a specialist servicing would more than cover a tankful of Diesel!

Hi, it is even worse. FLACKUS&MAURER do not even have the diagnostic tool any more. My dear S is over 30 years old now, not a high-end vintage car, only formally an H car.

So, it is a little in a nowhere area. But tomorrow I shall drive to the dealer I bought it from, who also specializes in vintage Mercedes cars.

I shall see how it goes ... ---

Hi, I took my dear old S to the dealer I bought it from over 30 years ago, and who also works on older Mercedes cars.

It passed the MOT, but the emissions were too high. The dealer had the diagnostic tool and found that the lambda sensor was to blame.

The sensor will be ordered, installed during another appointment, and my dear old S will get the badge.

The dealer is more than 30 mins. away compared to the previous one, but they could help me. So, I am quite happy !

On the day we were selling it, Mrs Nod's first MX-5 showed an engine warning light and went into limp home mode. Luckily, a mate had a fault reader which said the camshaft position sensor was telling fibs (lies). A £10 part (common with Fords so dirt cheap!) and 10 minutes of spannering saw the light go out.

Very glad you've got the old girl back and that she'll soon be sorted!

Hi, at the dealer in Mainz-Kastel/D.

An e-LOTUS :
