123reg conned us out of a couple of hundred quid here at work by failing to register a domain name under the .EU thing, preregistered but they slipped a stiff one up the backdoor. So they can do one. Thieves.

1&1 are sending out revised invoices changing the VAT, but generally are ok, i have a domain i dont want but cant seem to find how to get rid though
 
We use uk2.net at work and have had no problems as far as I am aware.
 
Stear clear of Fasthosts too, they are worse to get rid of than herpes. Reports last year of a substantial data theft by hackers, which Fasthosts refused to confirm or deny, meaning banking details held by them for may not be secure.
They managed to dump my main domain and continue to charge my account for domains I have not used for years, ignoring written requests to cancel, have attrocious customer service and shouldn't be in the business.

Go the 123 UK reg route as has been suggested earlier.
 
I use LCN.co.uk for about 15 domain names,

Hosting you can get anywhere. It is probable that your broadband provider has given you 50mb of free space anyway. You could host your site here and get the registered domain to point to it.

This is true of most packages including broadband from Virgin, Telewest, NTL, Blueyonder, Tiscali etc.

LCN domain names .co.uk about 7.50 per year and has not increased for 3 years complete with up to 10 e-mail addresses which can be diverted to your main e-mail.

Do not spend too much on your first hosting untill you know how much space you really need. Upgrading halfway through a contract period can prove costly.
 
I use 123.reg as well and have never had any problems (i buy my hosting elsewhere). I regularly buy co.uk domain names for £5.98 for 2 years.
 
Try godaddy.com for domains CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP! I use them and they're CHEAP! No problems either. And they're CHEAP.

Can't argue with free a .co.uk. This isn't a scam, I have used it for about 3 domains and the phone registration thing didn't cost.
 
I can second/third/fourth 123-reg. I've been using them for years and while you might be able to register a domain elsewhere for perhaps 50p to a quid a year less, they're a very reputable company, there's no hidden charges or "transfer fees" and you get full control of the domain name. Why anyone would go elsewhere is beyond me.

As regards your free .co.uk domain name, Matt, try transferring the domain name to another host without paying for it. There's no such thing as free on the internet! You'll pay for it one way or another!

As for hosting, spending less than £50 a year for web hosting is frugality at it's worst. If your site is just personal and you have no concerns that it about it going down unexpectedly (and it WILL), then by all means spend less than £50 a year on "Bob's Budget Web Hosting" but if you're using your website for a business, it makes absolutely no sense at all to get cheap hosting. Go for one of the reputable hosts, and there's plenty of them. I can give you a list of great web hosts who range in price.

I've bought all my domains from Easily. They're not the cheapest but I've never had issues with them in the 8 years I've been with 'em.

:agree: the number of people who think that cheap hosting and a domestic ADSL line are viable options for running a business astounds me. You may get away with it for a while, but eventually you will come a cropper and, potentially, learn a very hard lesson about SLAs, Backups and Connection Redundancy!

I hosted with Dotable for years and they were great. Now taken over by UK2.net and the servers are down more often than a tarts knickers and they also have crap customer service response times.

Namecheap are good registrars except when you have a reseller account with a .co.uk as the main account on U.S. based servers. For some reason they have to do some behind the scenes fiddling to get it to work and it takes a few trys to get their outsourced techs to understand the problem.
 
Its not about price it is about service and ease of use.

Hosting companies offer cheap domains to reel ou in. This week alone I have dealt with 3" totally rubbish" hosting companies which are holding onto clients domains, and have now caused us to eneter into disputes with Nominet

I will happily recomend a host, but will need to know some details first before pointing you in the right direction
 
I use 123reg.co.uk for domains and freewebs.com for hosting.

co.uk from 123reg is £6.30 for two years. Almost free.

Freewebs is almost advert free. They put a very small ad for themselves at the bottom of the page that you don't really notice.

If you don't log into your account for a month they start putting extra ads on your pages but just log in and out and they're gone.

I wouldn't use either of these for a business site but for personal use they're fine.

im a web designer and i have all my domains with krystal hosting.. they charge £6.99 for 2 years.. and its not much more to renew after that...

If you looking at good hosting... i always use this company its around $7.99 a month which is only £3 odd for unlimited space and always excellent support...
 
Some tidbits from me:

  • Avoid UKReg (FastHosts) and 1&1 for domain registration as their customer service records are rubbish.
  • 123-reg used to be really good as registrars, but they've also been getting some bad reports since being taken over by PIPEX. I still use them, though, as I've not had any issues.
  • Avoid GoDaddy unless you like a very cluttered interface for managing your domains. They also send out a lot of marketing emails to try and get you to spend more money.
  • For .com and .net, I've found NameCheap.com to be excellent over the years. Great features, good support, free WHOIS protection for the first year of registration, lots of discount coupons available online.
  • For .co.uk domains, Easily.co.uk and names.co.uk stand out as being well established and reliable.
  • Host your website from someone other than who you register your domain with. That way, if you encounter issues with the host it makes it much easier to switch.
  • If your website is critical to your business then take more than 5-minutes and a few suggestions from forums when choosing your host. Unsurprisingly, business class hosting isn't always the cheapest and neither does it come free.
  • Beware of letters (the kind that come through your door) from the Domain Renewal Group or the Domain Registry of America that look like renewal invoices, but are actually transfer authorisation requests. These are not affiliated with your original registrar unless you actually registered your domain(s) with them.
  • WHT can be a good website for checking out a web host's history.
  • US-based hosting is generally cheaper, but UK-based hosting can offer a snappier loading website (for a UK-based audience) due to the reduced amount of network.
  • Anyone off the street can position themselves as a hosting reseller. Do your research and look for testimonials.
 
Have you looked at www.one.com

Thats would I am with at the moment, seems ok however i did have issues trying to load wordpress but that could just be me....
