Cokin filters???

Hi I am new to the Forum, my name is Lee Harrison... I recently purchased a Cokin filter set to take some motion shots of rivers, tides and clouds etc. I bought a neutral density 4 and 8, the 4 gives good results and the 8 is good but changes the colour of shadows or dark colours in the picture and if I use them both together so I can open my shutter for longer, I gives a very visible red/pink tint across the picture with looks very fake and spoils it...

has anyone else come across this or have any ideas of how I could eliminate it???

I hope that you can help,

Thanks Lee Harrison

There is a slight colour tint to the Cokin ND Filters they are not completely neutral. The solution is to adjust the colour cast in Post Processing.

Welcome to the forums :) You a preston fan i hope ;)? Used to live up there myself, well just outside preston anyway in garstang :)

Anywho, i used to have cokin set myself, had a P154 ND8, got it from amazon and i think i got lucky as mine had no colour cast whatsoever. Was extremely happy with it (see this set on flickr for examples) but i have heard a lot of people having probs with it. Ive also got a B+W ND110 filter, that can give a nasty colour cast as well but you can either sort it out when you do your post-processing or you can set a custom white balance (go a little bit cooler than usual, ie 4500K rather than 5500K, these might not be the right numbers but im sure you get the drift). Ive tried both ways and ive found i prefer to change it in camera first, but your preferences may be different. Either way just make sure you shoot in RAW.

All the best,

Si

Here is an example of what I mean, the girl in the picture was wearing black tights and a dark grey top and they look very red... this was only on a 1 sec. exposure also the red on the rocks around the water fall was not there, it was dark moss???

I had a set of cokin nd filters which were awful. Serious magenta cast that couldn't be taken out in post. The nd 8 is shocking, try putting the nd4 together with the nd8.

I spent a long time speaking to warehouse express about them ( who I bought them from) but despite providing photos they wouldn't accept there was any problems. Hint: try googling cokin nd filter magenta cast.
Hence I never buy anything fromWE now.

Sorry but I think like me you may have wasted money.

Here's a simple photo of the sky with my nd8 filter

And another at padstow early morning

Jeus, is a bit extreme aint it. If ya can foot the cash and fancy taking a risk the P154 i had was the bomb.

Not the cheapest but jessops have it here, Ive no idea if theyll let you but you could always take your camera in and see if they'll let you try before you buy, that way youll know if the colour cast is there or not. Failing that the custom WB or PP is the best bet.

Love the orginal shot at padstow though, tis lovely

Thanks, 5am in the morning and I'd been up until 1am shooting the harbour. My missus thought I was nuts, but it's got to be done hasn't it :D

lol, fair one fella :D I keep meaning to do that myself but then the alarm goes off and all of a sudden i lose my bottle and go bk to bed :D one day ill actually do it!!

haha I love getting up early and staying out late, you get to see so much more of the day and see things that you wouldn't normally see, I've always said that if I could take a pill that would stop me from needing sleep, I would take it in a flash... a third of your life you spend in bed, imagine how much more you could achieve in you life with that time... it might just be me but I think sleep is a waste of time I'd rather be up and about, I only do it because I have to...

Thank you all for the comments, you given some very useful tips, I'll have to have a think about what to do now, whether to reinvest or just settle with what I have got...

Thanks Lee Harrison

Early night Lee? ;)

Apart from the Cokin's well known colour issues, ND4 and ND8 are not really dark enough for sea and cloud effects when you need several seconds exposure time at least.

You need an extreme ND like six or ten stops - that's ND64 or ND1000. B+W, Heliopan, Hoya, LightCraftWorkshop, Lee. LCW is cheapest, from Premier Ink. Or have a go with welding glass for a couple of quid - there's a long thread on using those here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=151141

What would you do to remove the pink colour cast in Photoshop?

If you shot RAW then just reduce the colour temperature when you open the picture with whatever RAW program you use. Can't help you with jpeg though as I never use them.

Never worked for me with the images I posted. I just discarded the filters.

When I first started out doing photography about 18 years ago, Cokin filters were all I could afford and even then they weren't cheap.......I still have them and still use them.
They used to come in hard plastic individual cases (not sure about now) and mine have held up beautifully all these years.
