Im after a set of Cokin P style filters that arent going to cost much.

Ive no experience with filters and so dont want to pay much for something im not going to use a whole lot to start with.

I have seen sets at £100+ which is far more than i would like to pay, but i am concerned about buying cheap ebay filter sets as im sure the quality will be awful and create poor photos.

Where am i best beginning?

Cheers :)

Buying a filter kit is a good idea if you are going to use all the filters in the kit.
I think for a beginer you may be better to buy a Cokin P holder. Plus one or two of the more commonly used filters. 1,2 Stop soft ND grads. polarizer and 10 stop nd filter. THen add to these as you need to. Word of caution Cokin P wide angle holder causes vignetting on Canon EFS 17-55 f2.8 lens. And welcom to the forum

By 1 and 2 stop do you mean where the filter is described as ND2 is that 2 stop? and ND1 would be 1 stop?

Oh actually I've worked it out now. Thanks for the advice

Basicly yes. However different makers use different ways of saying it. If you google useing nd filters I think you will find a comparison table.

That's exactly what I thought. I'd expect them to be poor quality aswell as take out more light than described

I've read about Cokin filters suffering colour casts many times but it's never happened to me and I bought my filters over a period of time so it can't be that I just bought them all from a good batch. I think that like some other issues the Cokin colour cast issue may just be more common on internet forums than in the wider world.

They may not be the best filters on the market but I find them ok for occasional use and I've never noticed any nasty effects.

Where did you find a cokin 10 stop filter?

You really do get what you pay for with these filters. Personally I do not like the color cast and stacking these filters is not even an option (horrible). It's ironic because the holder has multiple slots for stacking.

If I were you I would look into a holder that will work with some of the nicer filters like lee and so on. This way if you decide that you don't like the cokin (like me) you don't have to start all over because you will already have the holder. I'm not sure if there is such a holder but its worth looking into.

I've got a cokin holder and a polarising filter with 1 and 2 stop grad filters now. I haven't gotten a 10 stop yet they seem a bit expensive after everything else I've bought this month!

:)

Hi Shaylou
There are several makes of filters that fit Cokin P holder. Myself I use Hitech 100 filters thay fit the Cokin z pro. Check comment on vignetting.

I think I have the holder just below the z pro and the lee big stopper won't fit. If that holder will hold the good filters than it sounds like the place to start if you are on a budget. If the cokin works for you great but at least you will have options of upgrading down the road. I will I would of known this before I waisted my money on this filter. Now I have to junk it and start over.
