Colour Management & Firefox (Mac & Win)

Hi all,

I've noticed that Firefox 3 on Windows & Mac seems to wash out my pictures on my photoblog, whereas in Safari & IE they are the colours I intended and what i see in lightroom / CS3.

I've searched through the TP archives for the following issue I'm having and there are a few things mentioned last year around colour profiles around Firefox 3 but the consensus is that it impacts the mac less.

But from what I can tell it looks washed out on both systems and I'm looking for help / pointers in sorting out.

My workflow is somewhere along these lines for some pics, Lightroom 2 edits are in PhotoRGB and if I click on edit and open in CS3 it mentions the embedded profile, which I translate to Adobe RGB and edit the picture as such, resize, upload to web etc.. Other times which I feel is the cause of my woes is TIFF files exported from Photomatix after some HDR tone mapping. I then import them back into lightroom (do some more editing perhaps) and then export them to jpg resized for upload to web.

Any help appreciated on what I can do to iron the color profile gremlins out

Ta !

By default Firefox does not have the ability to display images with embedded profiles other than sRGB. All it will do is strip the profile out and show the images as what it thinks are sRGB. You can turn the option on... but there's no point.

If you're displaying for the web you should be using sRGB. Anything else will just cause problems for your website's visitors and mean your images aren't being seen in all their glory.

So on export from Lightroom / CS3 i need to make sure it's converted to sRGB. Is there any setting on Photomatix / Lightroom that mention this explicitly ?
I'm at work so can't check atm so appreciate someone having a look !

Thanks

I have detail missing when viewed in Firefox as compared to Safari (on my work Windows PC)

It's in the LR export window options. Presumably your images come out of LR and into Photomatix so you only need to worry about this in LR as the files will stay in sRGB unless you specifically change them again later.

Can't help you with Photomatix as I don 't use it, but Lightroom's are in two places.

Edit > Preferences > External Editing takes you to the menu where you can select the Colour Space that will be transferred across to CS3 when using the external editing option. I'm not a fan of this system though so have never used it.

Instead of external editing I use export to a series of folders using the Export (Ctrl + Shift + E) dialogue. I've created various User Presets that allow me to fire off files to the appropriate destination in the appropriate format and with the correct colour space embedded for that particular image.

With CS3 all you need to do is make sure that you've got the profile mismatch warnings turned on and set to the appropriate colour space and that you're saving your images with the sRGB colour space embedded.

It's normally directly from Photomatix (editing one RAW file :gag:) and the resultant tonemapped TIFF is imported into Lightroom.

Although looking here is exactly what you've mentioned. I'll need to doublecheck what my colorspace is on exporting a JPG for web.

Although I've just found this Export from Lightroom into Photomatix Pro which may be useful.. Anyone else tried this ?

Cheers !
