I used to have a compact camera as a spare, but in the last couple of years or so, I have never felt the need for one. Simply because, if I have a compact, such as Coolpix S50, it is just a point n shooter, so not going to get anything amazing. They're nice things to have, but in my case completely unneeded. For instance, went skiing in south of france earlier this year. Took my Ixus 40 and Fuiji S5500, and left my DSLR at home. Now, I never took the ixus on the skiing trips! I took the Fuji, and used that a fair biit, but 99% of the shots were on my then Nokia N97 mini! And I was happy with them! And, the compact camera is designed to be carried with you all the time - for those grab moments! Now, the girls have the massive carpet bags:lol:, but we don't! So, as well as your wallet, keys, mobile, (for some sillys, ipods as well!) you also have to fit in a compact camera in your pocket! Hence the compact camera is redundant for me. The better models, I agree with, such as P6000, D-Lux 4 etc. So to sum up, my X10 is my compact camera. Always there, and for the type of shots you'd take with a compact point n shoot, it delivers excellent results.

Does anyone agree with me, or was I up to late last night?

You were up too late last night. (Unless I completely misunderstood your post...)

Some of my best photos have been taken on the crappiest, oldest most knackered point and shoot ever...

The sensor is ******ed and because of this it gives an odd colour cast to images that make them very 'film like' if the light is right - one of the reasons I like the camera. They are technically nowhere near as good as what I'll get with my DSLR - nor are they anywhere near as sharp - but there's just something about the images it puts out that I really like.

Despite having a DSLR I still rate compacts very highly, and wouldn't be without one (or 7 as the case may be :D)

Fair enough, probably was! Design homework was getting to me!

I still just think they are unneeded for the majority of photos they would be used for - IMV a decent mobile will take pictures that are more than adequate.

Now, the odd thing is.... I (probably liek you, with 7 :D) like having them...just not using them! I'm trying to get as many Ixus and Canon G series as I can - have the G1 and Ixus 40 at the moment. BUT I won't use them! I'll turn them on, hold them and have a play...but not use them! :P

Yep, just like me. All the toys and little use out of them.

Mobile phones are just compact cameras, really. I would rather see someone at a pub using a compact though than swinging around a DSLR - for some reason that really annoys me, and I think it's an invitation to be mugged. I would never take my DSLR into an environment like that, mainly because I'm too small and a scaredy-cat to defend myself... lol. From what I gather most Mobile phones still aren't really up to compact quality and many people would rather just own a seperate camera anyway, hence the reason compacts are still selling strong.

The only reason I have so many cameras is because I got most of them (and a load of old lenses, some junk, some surprisingly good) out of charity shops. For a few quid you can hardly complain, when I've picked up a Polaroid, Smena SL, a Ricoh or two, Olympus and another brand that I can't remember. If I was more into MF lenses I wouldn't be about to drop a bullion on a 17-40 and instead just use the incredibly sharp, beautiful Pentax Lydith 30mm I have in a box. Then I could crack out the cine-camera that was my grandads and put a roll of 35mm in one of the compacts. Life on Mars anyone?!

Same here, the compacts I collect are cheap, best so far, got a Ixus 40, used, minor scratches, teensy little dent on the front, 100% working for £12! Its not being used, just sitting there, but still can't complain! I like using old lens, indeed I'm trying to sort out an adapter so I can use my Carl Zeiss 50 1.4 on my Nikon D5k. I do like the old lens, though not for day to day stuff, just when I fancy a change.

hmm thanks. :)

Makes mental note to never loan Callum camera equipment or anything of value. :D

Noooo my name is Callum... the Norma Stitz thing was a joke... geddit?!?!

I carry a little Ixus 82 in my pocket. I have a camera phone too but the Ixus is much better. Before I got the Ixus I used to carry a little metal bodied fixed focus and fixed zoom Medion. I think that even a basic compact is easily capable of taking pictures that look fine at A4, A3 even. I have some shots I took with that Medion that I'll keep forever.

If I'm going somewhere nice or interesting I'll probably take my GF1 or LX2.

I keep my DSLR for occasions when I want the best quality (although the GF1 can arguably beat my DSLR in many situations) and for when I'm going out by myself to take pictures.

The samples I posted above were also taken by a fixed focal length and fixed focus camera. You have two choices - infinity focus or Macro focus and that's it! I think the less options you have (to a point anyway) the more creative it makes you.

I really don't like shots taken with a mobile (perhaps I just need a better mobile), I only use the camera in my mobile to make visual notes when needed. I far prefer the results from even the cheapest of compacts.

I'd agree with that!

Woof, that third one is lovely, very film like. I suspect the sensor on that Medion is rather tired like mine is.

Maybe. I love that little camera.

It went everywhere with me for a couple of years and it took some pictures that I'll treasure forever. They look fine printed to A4 and they're pretty sharp. There's a bit of a colour cast but I can mostly correct it, the lens distorts a bit and it can't cope shooting into bright sunshine but my mother bought me it and I love it.

At one point they were £10 in the medion shop.
