Compatable lens hoods

Now that i've learned a bit more about lens hoods thanks to the "basics" section of this fine forum i'm now looking to purchase on for my Canon 10-22.

Having seen them range from about £25 - £30+ i decided to check eBay where there seem to be a lot of campatible ones for £5 - £10......Now, I don't mind paying good money for a quality product but really we're talking about a piece of plastic with some felt in it here are we not? Just how bad can a "compatible" be and it it really worth the extra cost to buy a genuine Canon one? I happily use compatible batteries in the camera and they seem to do as good a job as the genuine Canon one

Exactly its a bit of plastic. As long as its a replica of the required hood, no problem, why spend £30 when you can spend £5.

So long as it's not shiny plastic inside, then pretty much yes.

I bought an ebay cheapy... for my kit lens. It didn't fit quite so well as the Canon ones I do have. It could just be a slightly defective, but I figured spend 500 on a lens, it won't kill me to spend 30 on a hood.

Even if it IS shiny inside, a squirt of matt black paint will make it matt and some [bluepeter]sticky black plastic felt[/bluepeter] will reduce reflection even more. I've heard good things about Marumi hoods and they're available from www.premier-ink.co.uk (among others).

I bought a hood from ebay, perfect fit, matt black inside and only £3 delivered. Not bad seeing as the Canon version was £30.

If I ever need a hood, I just get a cheapy from HK, usually no more than a fiver.

And as has been said, just ensure they are matt / flock lines (the Canon ones are flock lined) to avoid any reflections
